VMWARE backup disable quiesced snapshot
Created: 03 Aug 2011 | 4 comments
I Have a win virt in ESX vSphrear 4.1 that will not quiesce when a snapshot is created.
I have VMware tools installed and when it backs up the server it fails as its trying to use the quiesce option. How can I turn it off from Backup exec?
backup Exec 2010 R2
many thanks, Duncan

I am also facing the same problem. If you re-try the job, it can do the backup without problem.
I have set that if this error occur, the job will re-try after one hour.

You cannot turn of the quiescing as BE will always execute the freeze/thaw scripts through the vmware tools installed in the VM.
It could be that something with your RAWS installation went wrong and it did not remove the vmware snapshot provider correctly. So what I would suggest is:
@Ivan2: I think this is another problem. You might have to check your application eventlog for entries around the time of the backup. It seems as one of the VSS writers does not always complete successfully and thus the return code of the pre-freeze script is not zero. Maybe a timeout issue. If you are running Windows 2003 make sure you have the latest VSS hotfix installed (does not come with windows update).

Please take the time and mark this post as solution if it solved your problem - thanks!
Have you installed the Remote Agent to the virtual machine?
And if yes have you rebooted the virtual machine afterwards?
If you install the Backup Exec Agent to a virtual machine the VMware VSS-Provider gets uninstalled and the BEVSS Provider gets installed. To make the provider work you have to reboot the VM. As long as you do not reboot backup will fail.
To be honest if you can't request a quiesced snapshot using the VMware dialog boxes then you should be troubleshooting that with VMware - Backup Exec will always try to quiesce.
