VMware backup issue after upgrading VMware tools

Created: 28 Nov 2012 | 3 comments

Dear All,

We get this error with the VMware option

The backup has detected that both the VMware VSS Provider and the Symantec VSS Provider have been installed on the virtual machine. However, only one VSS Provider can be used on a virtual machine. You must uninstall the VMware VSS Provider

I understand from another discussion that the BE Remote Agent for Windows does automatically deinstall the VMware VSS Provider when it is detected. But when the VMware tools has been upgraded afterwards, the VMware VSS Provider is reinstalled.

How can I resolve the issue?

I tried to repair the BE Agent directly on the server. But it didn't find the msi package. To initiate a repair from the BE console is not possible it seems.

Is the only way to remove the BE Agent and reinstall?

Thanks,

Edy

Hey Edy,

Repush the BE Agent from the Media server.

For reference whenever you install or update VMware tools, if the Backup Exec Remote agent is installed (or if you plan to install it)  then you should install the tools using the custom settings and deselect the VSS Provider. Lmosla has given the solution now you have already got your install wrong, if you re-install the Backup Exec remote agent its should disable the VMware driver.

Any problems with this then uninstall both the Backup Exec Remote agent and the VMware tools, then install the tools with the VSS driver deslected (using custom install) then install the BE remote agent.

Note for all the above options, you may need to restart the Virtual Machine during parts of the process.

I believe you can go into add/remove programs and remove just the VSS driver from VMware Tools by changing it's settings.  But Colin above wrote out a great explanation of what to do and why it does what it does.
