VMWare PXE boot??

So... I read somewhere that I can PXE boot on a vmware virtual machine, and it should be no issue...

I just got done building a master image on a virtual machine, rebooted to pxe boot to capture and it boots, loads my dos disk, and installs the nic drivers, and gets to DHCP (just before bootworks)and it will sit there for about 5 min and then error stating it can't contact DHCP server...

Anyone have any ideas why this would be happening... I know PXE itself is working and the computer is getting an IP otherwise it would never get that far with PXE to begin with...

How does everyone else do this???

Sounds like you may be having a driver problem. Check out https://www-secure.symantec.com/community/tip/2919.... It is an article on how to get VMware to work with WinPE for imaging.

What about DNS

If DNS is not working properly, then DHCP won't work either. The best way to test this is to try pinging the machine by IP address and by DNS name while it is snagged on dhcp and looking at waht comes back at you. If the IP address works but the DNS name doesn't, then your problem is a simple configuration issue.

If the IP address does not resolve, then you've got connectivity issues and I recommemd you start at the cabling and make certain everything is plugged in tightly. Then try a different driver if this doesn't solve it.

I had this same problem on

I had this same problem on our roadshow. It turned out to be a DNS issue as listed above by the other poster.

VMWARE PXE Boot

biscuitgod,

I use Altiris DS to build our VMs using PXE. The baremetal VM boots to PXE and loads the 32bit Linux automation which has the drivers for the flex VMNIC or the E1000 NIC drivers. I did not have to add them.

With WinPE 2.1 possibly...

I recall having no issues with WinPE 1.6, but then I had to add driver support for VMWare on systems migrated to WinPE2.1

Can't recall though if this was for VMWare workstation or ESX though.

Kind Regards,
