VSS & COM+ Errors on VM backup

Created: 12 Mar 2013 | 5 comments

OK, Ive searched around but did not find much on this problem so hopefully someone can provide me a little insight to these errors. I have a Windows 2008 R2 Standard fully patched running BE exec 2010 R2 w/ SP1. Im doing a VMware backup on two 2008 R2 machines that are fully patched. Now the backup completes even though I do have a GRT exemption but in one of my servers I notice errors in the application logs ever time the backup runs. The other VM is fine but on the other I get the following errors approx 15 times:
Event System Warning - Event ID 4609
The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was 80070057 from line 65 of d:\w7rtm\com\complus\src\events\tier1\subscription.cpp. This warning may be expected if the computer is low on resources. If the computer is not low on resources, and these warnings persist, it may indicate a problem in the COM+ Event System.

Before that I get 3 of these:
VSS Error - Event ID 12291
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Error on creating/using the COM+ Writers publisher interface: Abort({2D5A8039-74AD-47F2-A41A-9E62F745A1EF}) [0x80042302, A Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error.
Check the Application event log for more information.
Operation:
Executing Asynchronous Operation
Context:
Current State: DoSnapshotSet

And 2 of these:

VSS Error - Event 8193
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine IMultiInterfaceEventControl::GetSubscriptions. hr = 0x80010108, The object invoked has disconnected from its clients.

Has anyone encountered this or these errors before?  As I said, this does not happen to another VM and the backup seems to complete so any insight would be appreciated as I would really like know what is possibly wrong. Thanks in advance.

Well I'd start by updating to Backup Exec 2010 R3 and then re-installing RAWS into the VM in question.

Do you have to download R3 update by itself since the live update feature says its currently up to date?

You cannot use LU to upgrade to R3.  You have to download BE 2010 R3 from either the fileconnect site or

http://trialware.norton.com/files/fc/Backup_Exec_2010_13.0.5204_MultiPlatforms_Multilingual_DVD.iso

After your upgrade, do not forget to run LiveUpdate a couple of time to update it to SP2 and the latest hotfixes.

After you have upgraded to R3, push out the remote agent again.

Your existing licence keys will work.

Ok..thanks. I updated to R3 and Im now working on all the agents. We'll see how this works out.

Well I upgraded to R3 which went fine but created a bunch of my jobs fail for various reasons not to mention it screwed up some of my custom policies that I had to recreate. Im still trying to hash out the various backup issues as some have failed others have not. I did update the remote agents, some prompted for reboot, others did not but in all I probably had to reboot all servers and republish to regain trust on some of them.

On another note, I dont see the issue of errors in the application event log yet on my VM but I had to rerun a full backup due to the fact that the job policy had to be recreated to correct the old one. We'll see how the differential jobs work over the next week and post back if the issue is still there. The other odd thing is, I still get a GRT excemption on the other VM during the back up but have to post seperate later as I got too much to resolve first.
