VSS ISSUE
Created: 16 Oct 2012 | 4 comments
for my customer the system state and shadow copy components of a remote machine are all running succussfully but on checking the writer status of the same machine most of them including the system state writer are at waiting for completion status. No other VSS providers. Customer asking how come they are successfull !!
The remote machine is a WIndows 2003 standard server.. When the writer status is at waiting for completion status, even now when I take a backup of system state it is successfull. What causes the system state backup to be successfull?

Hello,
Apply the VSS patch [KB940349] from Microsoft. A reboot is required for the Remote Server.
Download the patch from : http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=11896
Hope that helps !

Hi, Are you getting any errors in the Window event logs on the server running the backup, or the Job Log?
Make the System state backup a separate job. In the Backulp Job Properties under the Advanced Open File Option select the checkbox to use the Advanced Open File Option < select the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service and the Snapshot provider: System - Use Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider and check the checkbox for Process logical volumes for backup one at a time.
Let me know if this helps
thanks theonkar I will try that update.
Lenora: the selection list has only system state selected. And I guess the system state will use VSS irrespecting of checking that box.
AS902, theOkar's reccomendation is totally solid. The Advance Open file change was more of a next step, if need be. In many VSS related support cases isolating the use of the Microsoft Shadow Copy provider resolves the problem, so if the issue is still there after applying the patch, just for the heck of it, give it a try.
