  • 1.  Warning : MBR.Bin could not be created

    Posted Aug 13, 2013 10:18 AM

I have followed the the guide for How to Create and Deploy Images via Console Without Installing the Remote Client found here

    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/how-create-and-deploy-images-console-without-installing-remote-client

but I keep getting the error message "Warning : MBR.Bin could not be created"

I have a usb stick that loads up my PE environment and gives me a Network address ok and starts up NGCTW32.EXE -Console ok.

The console cmd window starts up and polls correctly to my console server, and I can see it in the default group folder.

However if I run a task - it shuts down and loads back into the operating system of the host machine (which in this case does not have the client installed)

The task I am running is to just copy a file to the C: drive of the machine.

The console event details pane shows "Details for : To Target operating system - Failed to reboot client to new OS"

    Any help appreciated

    thanks

Does your WinPE environment contain the correct drivers for your SATA chipset?  If not, the problem may be a fatal error caused by trying to copy a file to a non existent C: drive, as WinPE could not mount it without the correct drivers.

Also, you need to check where your USB stick is being mounted. The WinPE image loads to X: by default but it also has USB support so will have mounted the USB stick on a different drive letter. If WinPE could not detect any local drives (due to lack of drivers) then it may well have assigned C: to the stick.

Exit to the WinPE command prompt and have a look around at the drive letter assignments.

Hi, thanks for replying. I have checked the c: drive and it is correctly assigned to the sata drive. I can browse some of the op systems files no problem. I can also ghost from ghost32 program, from the network image we have and it finds images the c drive fine. I only get the MBR.bin error when I go into the console.....

What is your precise Ghost version - is it 11.5.1.2266?  If so, check the sticky posting at the top of this forum for contact details for Tech Support, as it may be that your particular scenario requires one of the four targetted patches that have been released since build 2266 to address very specific issues.

Using the client software would work as per design.I believe ,using boot media is what causing the failure. Please post the task scenario.

Hi Maneesh, yes you may be right.... it could be the boot media. What I am looking to do is this: Create a model pc, and then create a second boot partition with a modified winpe. The modified winpe will be able to display a HTA on boot with various options. If the PC develops a fault for whatever reason, the end user can boot into the 2nd partition and directed by the support helpdesk click the hta button that starts up the remote console. So far I have created the winpe (by following http://www.symantec.com/connect/articles/readyadventures-winpe) I have created some HTA and vbs and have these running ok within the WINPE environment. I have copied the ghost folder that is created from a USB boot disk in the console and copied that across, and then run start ghct32.exe -console. this is where I get the "Warning MBR.bin cant be created" message. I am still testing though and I am booting and starting the client from a USB stick... I might try creating a 2nd partition first and loading the winpe files into there and boot from that and see if there is any difference.....

What you might want to consider is having the recovery image held locally rather than dragging it down over the network, within a third hidden partition (assuming Win 7 where two partitions are already present for the O/S). Then you can boot into WinPE and recover the image locally.  With the huge amount of hard disk capacity now available, reserving 30Gb for a large image is not going to make much impact.
