  • 1.  WDE Won't accept my passphrase

I have a laptop with a 1TB hdd, and considering i reinstall windows about every 3 months and encrypting and drecrypting takes a lot on 1Tb, I decided to gen an SSD and move the 1tb hdd in the cd-rom bay with an adapter and keep it always encrypted and just use the ssd for the windows main drive. Everything went well the first time I installed windows, i encrypted the hdd's one after another and it was working fine, just had to input my passphrase one at boot and both hdd's where visible to windows.

Now i had to reinstall windows and formated the small ssd, installed windows, installed WDE, at reboot asked for the 1TB drive's passphrase and every thing worked fine. So I encrypted the small ssd and was fine until reboot. I input my passphrase at boot, windows boots, askes for the 1Tb hdd passphrase and it keep saying it's wrong. Tryed to decrypt it still says it's wrong. Tryed the command line...still worng passphrase. I installed the 1TB hdd in another machine as the only drive, and at boot i input my passphrase, it accepts it and says missing operating system (obiously), so i guess the passphrase is correct.

I connected the 1TB hdd to an usb to sata adaptor, connected it to my laptop, tried decrypting from the command line it says decryping but nothing is happening, so obviously my passphrase is the same. Tried again and it said my passphrase is wrong.

I just don't know what to do in this case... i'm stuck, the passphase for both are the same so it can't have changed. Some input would be apreciated.

here are the outputs from the command line

    pgpwde --disk-status disk 0
Disk 0 is instrumented by bootguard.
      Current key is valid.
    Drive encrypted
      Total sectors: 1953521664 highwatermark: 1953521664
Authentication needed to decode disk session key.
Request sent to Disk status was successful

    and ...

pgpwde --decrypt -p XXXXXXX --disk 1
Request sent to Start decrypt disk was successful (but nothing gets decrypted)

you are checking the status for disk 0 and trying to decrypt disk 1. You should check "pgpwde --disk-status disk 1" now

As you were able to unlock the drive when you had Encryption Desktop installed on your SSD before it was encrypted, I'd suggest the best course of action is:

    • Install Encryption Desktop on another machine
    • Connect a 1TB drive and decrypt
    • Connect back to Laptop
    • Re-encrypt

It sounds as if having a bootguard instance on both drives is causing some confusion within the software.  It really shouldn't, so you might want to check your software versions and release notes to see if it has been fixed.

If using an older version of the client, you might have been hit by this:
