Web Server Crashes when backing it up remotely.

Hi,

Our Web Server (Windows 2003 running Apache) seems to crash and freeze up around the same time as BackupExec 11d is remotely backing it up? Apache stops working so the website is not accessible and this coincides with the remote backup.

There is also a yellow triangle in the selections list next to our web server even though publishing is enabled.

Could you help us with this please?

Thanks

Peter

Peter,

Since the remote server is a "regular" windows server you would need to check the Event Logs to see if any services were terminated unexpectedly, and if so, what was happening around that time.  You could also check any DRWTSN32.LOG or USER.DMP for further information as to what is "crashing" the server.  Without any of this information, I really can not say what is happening.

Also, do you have Lotus, Exchange, SQL or any other database related software installed on the server?  Are you running the backup job with AOFO?

However, I would recommend you run "Tools | LiveUpdate" to get your media server up to the "latest and greatest" and then upgrade all the remote servers.

Regards,

Christiane

Hi,

I have checked the logs as you suggested but there were no usefull errors.  We are using MySQL to run the website, but we do not have AOFO installed. We have also updated BackupExec with the latest patches and updated the remote agent. We notice that the server seems stuck on the pre-processing job which shuts down the McAfee anti-virus and then hangs with no anti-Virus running. The remote agent also appears in the tasktray with a red icon?

Hi Peter,

Regarding the Remote Agent "red icon" - it sound like you have the "Symantec Backup Exec Remote Agent Utility" running, and that the Remote Agent service might have been stopped.  If this is the case, then try starting the service and run a backup to see if this would enable a backup of the "webserver".  If not, then you would most likely need to open a case with Technical Support as documentation would be required for further review and trouble-shooting.

You could also try upgrading to the very latest of Backup Exec from www.backupexec.com and download the "Trial Ware" version of the software.  To download Backup Exec for Windows Servers v11d rev 7170 you would need an account to log in, however if you do not have one, just create one, answer some questions and download the software.  Once it has been installed, make sure all hotfixes have been installed (run LiveUpdate) and upgrade all Remote Agents.

Regards,

Christiane
