Hi Deepak, SFW is a volume

Hi Deepak,

SFW is a volume management product which provides many features that are not available in the Windows OS natively.

Here are a couple of benefits of SFW over the OS disk management would be:

1. Volume Replication - this can replicated data from the VM to another server in another location to keep your data safe for site outage.

2.  Flashsnap - this can be used to take very quick backups of your data.  This can be used in conjuction with our NBU product to perform offhost backups of your data so that the load of backing up your data is minimized on the production server.

There are many other benenfits that SFW provides to any server.  Please check out our product guide page.

Thanks,

Wally

Whitepaper for SF in Virtual Machines

Although this document is focused on UNIX & Linux, there is significant parity between the two platforms     -benefits wise- under a VMware/Virtual Machine context.  That being said, if you are considering other VM technologies such as Hyper-V, the SFW support with 6.0 is substantial.  You will need to ignore any reference to VxFS, CFS or CDS as those are UNIX Specific technologies.  The main tenets for the most part however are platform agnostic.

Data Mirroring with Site Awareness

Non Disruptive Array Migrations

VVR and FlashSnap Options (As Wally Mentioned Above)

Consistent Storage Management across all platforms with VOM (Veritas Operation Manager)

RDM or in-guest MS iSCSI Initiator support.

Hope this helps,

Joe D
