  • 1.  What are your plans for CMS 7.1?

With the release of ITMS 7.1 expected less than a week a way, on Monday 7th March, what are your plans, if any, for evaluation and upgrades? Here is recap of some of the new features in 7.1 and beyond, which someone else posted:

Personally, I am keen to move to 7.1 from 7.0 as soon as possible, depending on bugs or upgrade issues.  I am on MR1 with Dell Client Manager, so will be interested to see what options there are to upgrade, as it’s been mentioned you may have to be on MR2 at a minimum and also what about DCM, which has been incompatible with the latest updates (SMP SP5 etc) for the last 6 months.

I haven’t really been able to harness much of the new functionality in 7.0, compared to the previous release, so hopefully with 7.1, I can move things forward, particularly with Deployment Solution.

Installing on Monday and never looking back.  Believe it or not, I don't have Altiris 7 in production yet.  As someone who gets things done, I've been called in to clean up a lot of messes from other folks over the past year.  It's fasttracked on Monday.

When you say "installing on Monday"...do you mean "installing and deploying to production" or "installing in the test lab and start testing ASAP"?   Hopefully the latter!

We're going to be working on our NS 7.1 rollout plan this year, then hopefully start late this year in fall or early winter with the actual rollout.  We have a large (~10K nodes) base of Recovery Solution clients though, so we have to wait until RS 7.1 is released. No firm commitment has been made for that of course!

I suppose I will finally make the time to stand up an NS7.1 box and start poking it to see what we're going to need to do to move into the shiny, Silver-lighted (tm) future of Altiris...and I'll finally be able to answer some of those darned NS7 questions here on Connec, so you and Jim can quit making fun of met! laugh

I’d like to roll this out next month or soon after depending on a lot of factors, which I know may prove ambitious and typically it would be worth waiting for the first SP/MR first but I think it would be beneficial being on the new platform sooner rather than later for us.

I’ll scrutinize the docs, see the reaction it gets here, along with building a server and testing it myself, then I’ll see if I feel the same way!

I already have 10000 agents in production.  No, I don't.  That would be insane.

I am working on installing 7.1 right now, but getting some errors I'm working through.  I'm setting it up as a pre-production server.  I'll test with it then move it into production when it's ready.

That's reasonable depending on node count.  I did place a support call this morning and the rep did tell me, "Well, it be my first time seeing 7.1 as well!" so be prepared to either learn together or force escalations as an early adopter.

While dates may be important, what's more important is that the product is thoroughly tested before beginning a pilot roll-out, and that you have a paced production roll-out -- because this really is a new product on a whole new architecture (64-bit).  Much is the same from 7.0, but then again, much is different.

I imagine I'd be looking at May myself for the 1-2% pilot, and based on that you're going to determine your larger pilot then your production roll-out.
