This issue has been solved. See solution.

I'm about to purchase Back Exec 2010 but my head is spinning with what licences/agents and how many of each i require.

I'll be backing up 8  x 2003/8 servers, one of which will host Backup Exec 2010.

4 servers have fairly static SQL 2005/8 databases on them. Can i backup these databases without purchasing the SQL agent?

1 server is our DC. Will i need the Active Directory agent for this or would RAWS suffice?

1 is our Exchange server. We use ArcMail Defender for recovering lost mail/corrupt mailboxes, so i'm thinking that we will not need the Exchange Agent installed, just RAWS. Is this so?

I'll be backing up to a DELL TL2000 tape library, allocating each daily backup to its particular slot in the library. Will i need the Library Expansion Option to do this?

Do each these additional options include RAWS?

Many thanks in advance for any advice given,

Aaron

(1) You can use SQL to create

(1) You can use SQL to create a backup of your database(s). Then you can use the standard BE Agent to create a backup of these files (they will not be in use).

(2) If your library has only one tapedrive, you don't need an extra license for the Library Expansion Option.

A SQL (or Exchange) agent will include a standaard BE Remote agent.

If this response answers your concern, please mark it as a "solution"

Alternatively, if you prefer

Alternatively, if you prefer letting BE do the job, you can buy a SQL agent for each MS SQL server you have.

(as stated, SQL agent includes Remote Windows agent - AWS-).

You can also buy a basic AWS agent which allow backing up open files... but in this case, Your transaction

log (SQL one) won't be truncated (as it can be using SQL agent).

For AD, a basic AWS would allows backing up the AD controler. The ADRA (AD Remote Agent) could be a

good choice as is allows fine granular AD item restoring. (as SQL agent, AD agent include AWS agent).
