  • 1.  What changes to Exchange when installing BMG?

    Posted Feb 02, 2011 09:28 PM

    Hi all :)

Well I am getting ready to flick the switch and cut over to BMG.

Our current configuration is:  Firewall/router with NAT to point incoming smtp to our exchange 2003 server.

Now I know to alter this NAT to point smtp to the new BMG server and within BMG I have pointed it to the exchange server.

I have set up BMG to scan inbound and outbound.

What I need to know is, What changes do I need to make within the exchange server? I will need to somehow point outgoing smtp directly to the BMG server right? how do I do this? and are there any other things I'll need to change within exchange? We don't allow open relay and have a list of internal machines that have to be able to relay, do I add the IP of the BMG server to this list?

appreciate help with this, I find the sym documentation a bit all over the place to be honest and this being our email I am keen to get this right the first time! :)

    thanks

    Hello,

For outbound mail flow over Brightmail, change your Exchange server's transport hubs to your Brightmail server. Brightmail by default send outgoing mails by resolving mx records.

For inbound, NAT your Brightmail internal ip address to your mx record ip address and configure brightmail internal smtp relay downstream to your exchange server.

One additional consideration is to check and see if your firewall/router has SMTP scanning enabled.  If it does you will need to either dissable it or add the IP of the device to your internal mail hosts in the brightmail gateway.

    Hi Oykun :)

I am not familiar for the term "transport hubs" in relation to Exchange 2003... can you elaborate on what this is please? thanks

    Hello TRP,

for Exchange 2003 then you need to configure your send smtp transport connector to face your Brightmail's outbound interface.
