  • 1.  What is the difference between CMDB Solutions and Asset Management?

    Posted Dec 11, 2013 01:35 PM

What is the difference between these two?  I ask because we own the Client Management Suite which included the CMDB Solution but not the Asset Management.  I looked through the CMDB Solution user guide and saw that you can create locations, departments etc. which is greate since all really that matters to being able to use the Resource Association Diagram.

WHat is the difference between the two? where can I find guides to create and build the Resource Association Diagram (right now it just shows the machine by itself not connected to anything)?

Jean, CMDB Solution is not included in Client Management Suite. In Asset Management soluiton the CMDB solution does the following:

CMDB Solution lets you model configuration items, resources,

and the relationships between them in a central database. It lets

you facilitate the identification of all components and relationships,

and instigate any required changes. The solution actively manages

resources according to user-specified instructions in jobs, tasks,

configuration policies, and custom CMDB rules.

Be careful not to install CMDB solution when you install Client Management Suite, it will give you head aches down the road with upgrades and patches.

With the release of 7.5, CMDB Solution is now included with any of the Suites (Client Management Suite, Asset Management Suite, and Server Management Suite).

Here are User Guides for Asset and CMDB to learn more about these:

Asset Management Suite provides a management console, a database environment, and a suite of solutions that let you  track assets and asset-related information.  The suite includes Asset Management Solution, Barcode Solution, and CMDB Solution.  Asset Management Suite specializes in tracking IT-related assets, such as computers and software.  You can also use it to track other types of assets, such as furniture and company cars.

In association with assets, you can record and track many types of documents and documented details.  For example, you can track lease schedules, NDAs (non-disclosure agreements), SLAs (Service Level Agreements), and warranty information.  Contracts and contract details can be associated with assets so that you can easily view the contractual information that is related to specific assets.  You can also configure the software so that it notifies you of the upcoming actions that are specified in a contract.

You can use the Symantec Management Console to view the value of an asset or a group of assets.  You can use it to view the department, cost center, and user that is assigned to an asset.  You can use it to improve your ability to allocate software and hardware costs to specific users and departments.  You can also use it to keep track of software license details so that you avoid paying for the licenses that you do not need.  Additionally, Asset Management Suite aligns with IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) standards.  It also helps you comply with international IT standards such as COBIT and U.S. federal laws such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and HIPAA.

CMDB (Configuration Management Database) Solution started off as a component of Asset Management Suite, but has been a free product for sometime.  This solution lets you model configuration items for any component in your environment and the relationships between them in a centralized database.  CMDB Solution lets you identify all components and relationships and to instigate any required changes.  The solution actively manages configuration items according to user-specified instructions in jobs, tasks, figuration policies, and custom CMDB rules.

I do not see in the ITMS_Implementation_Guide on pg 24-25 that it is optional or included in CMS. Is there intent to update this document to reflect that change. We are moving to 7.5 and might consider CMDB solution in the future for managing associations of pertinant information like main user and dept or location for a given computer object.  Thanks

Thanks for the heads up on this not being correct in the ITMS guide. I will notify the InfoDev team and ask them to fix.

I just checked the Asset Management Suite 7.5 Release notes

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=DOC5695

and found the following info on page 12 regarding CMDB:

License check has been removed. CMDB Solution is now available to all Altiris solutions as a
feature. You can now install CMDB Solution as a feature of Inventory, Client Management Suite,
and Server Management Suite. The solution is already installed with Asset Management Suite,
    ServiceDesk, and IT Management Suite.

Note: In a hierarchy, CMDB Solution must be installed on the parent Notification Server. Do not
install CMDB Solution on a child Notification Server.
