What is the difference between VBB and Dump backup type?

Created: 06 Aug 2013 | 3 comments

Greetings,

Using BE 2010 to backup NDMP data to a Data Domain appliance. NDMP backup type setting in the backup policy had been set to VBB. We recently installed DD Boost. Backups began to fail. Changed NDMP backup type setting to DUMP. Backups are successful. Is there a certain way to configure an NDMP backup to use DD Boost? What is the difference between VBB and DUMP?

Thanks.

VBB and DUMP are different NDMP backup types

VBB is only supported if your NDMP device vendor is EMC

Please not that When you select the “dump” backup type, you can select specific files anddirectories that you do not want to include in the backup job but If you select VBB as the backup method, exclusions are ignored.  <-- Page 1792 and 1796 B.E. 2010 Admin guide

The DD Boost makes your device into an OST device.  To use this OST device, you need to buy and install a dedup licence on your media server, and then install the OST-plugin on the media server.  After that, define the device as a dedup destination on media server.
