  • 1.  What hardware uses SWG 8450 and 8490?

Short question (need for server rack planning):

What hardware is used as platform for Symantec Web Gateway appliances 8450 and 8490?

I have found this thread on Symantec Connect: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/information-required-about-symantec-web-gateway-appliance-hardware, but it is Dec-2010. Is there some fresh and official information regarding this?

The latest articles I can find on the actual models used are below (both from last year):

Power Consumption metrics for the Symantec Web Gateway 8450 and 8490 platforms

SWG on Dell R720 hardware shows 72 degrees Celsius as a red status temperature

Thank you for the reseach. This information is from Symantec web site and probably it is true that Dell hardware is still used:

    8450 - Dell PowerEdge R310, and SWG 8490 - Dell PowerEdge R710.

Yeah, Symantec have been using Dell HW for a while now, the only bit that may be inaccurate is the exact model number (note how the first article states the R710 is used for the 8490 whereas the second article states it is the R720 instead).

What exact information are you after?  If it's just for the purposes of racking, then the above info should be sufficient.

My goal is to determine the size of appliance, the weight, and other physical parameters to be sure it will fit in the physical infrastructure.

In that case there should be little difference between the R720 and R710, though I'd assume the R720 for the 8490 as it is mentioned in the later of the two articles I posted

We will continue to use Dell hardware and their is a refresh in the works for later this year, so the machines will be beefier.

This is important information. How could I officially contact you to get the information on what exactly hardware is used in SWG now, and what will be in the future?

Should I send a direct message to you.
