What kind of Backup Exec and Agents should I have?

Created: 23 Jan 2013 | 8 comments

Hello, I have a problem with the choise of an appropriate solution. For example: I have two serwers, a couple computers, streamer and tape loader. What kind of Backup Exec (with Agents) should I buy to backup all my data?

And the second question: if streamer/tape loader must be connected to Backup Exec server or can I connect it to Agent?

Best regards.

Hello Niki,

Your Tape Loader (Tape library) should be connected to Backup Exec server.

You need to buy one Backup Exec base (core) License key. Install Backup Exec on any one server.

In addition to that you will require one BE Remote Agent for Windows (RAWS) license key to backup the remote server.

You also have couple of computers. I assume they are using client OS like Win XP or Win 7.

If it is Win XP then no need for any more Licenses.

If it is Win 7 then you need to buy number of RAWS as number of client machines.

If your Tape library as more than 1 Tape drives then you need to buy the that number of Library Expansion Option (LEO) licenses.

Thanks,

-Sush...

Hope this piece of Information Helps you... and if it does then mark this response as Solution....!!!

Thank you for your reply Sush...

1. So - one BE (core) Licence key for two servers? What in case when there is four servers?

2. Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows (RAWS) is named just "Backup Exec 2012 Agent for Windows" and I need it only in case when my OS is not Windows XP (needed for any other Windows like Vista/7/8)?

Greetings!

Hello Niki,

 1) You will have to install BE on only one server. So only 1 core license. You will have to install RAWS on other servers and back them up using the core BE software.

2). Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows (RAWS) is named just "Backup Exec 2012 Agent for Windows" and I need it only in case when my OS is not Windows XP (needed for any other Windows like Vista/7/8)?

YES. This is correct. Win 8 is still not supported by any version of BE. It will be supported in near future.

Hope this piece of Information Helps you... and if it does then mark this response as Solution....!!!

Thanks, you helped me alot and I think that my problem is solved at this moment. I will proceed and I will ask you if I have a problem.

Can you tell me what is the difference beteween "Backup Exec Agent for Windows" and "Backup Exec Agent Frsktop and Laptop Option"?

Best regards.

Desktop & Laptop Option (DLO) was one of the software integrated with Backup Exec.

With Backup Exec Remote Agent you can backup the complete remote server and can be restored in case of disaster recovery of that server.

Whereas DLO was used to backup specific files and folder of the USER logging into the remote machine.

From Backup Exec 2012 DLO is not included in BE but it is a complete different software called S-DLO (Symantec DLO)

Thanks,

-Sush...

And... if you have more than one tape drive in your library, you need LEO (Library Expasion Option)

Take a look to  http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO22778 for LEO.

Don't forget to check the Hardware Compatibility List and Software Compatibility List for your BE. This is a MUST. (Then you will be sure that everything in your enviroment is supported)

Regards.

I think this will fit your needs http://www.emea.symantec.com/beguide/en-GB/files/BE2012_customer_license_guide.pdf

There was one for BE2010 I think.

@nikitag - If you are backing up applications or databases, like Exchange and/or SQL databases, you would need to buy one Agent for Applications and Databases licence for each application on each machine.

I would strongly suggest that you talk to a Symantec reseller first so that they can take a look at your environment and advise you accordingly.  There are many ways to licence BE and the information that you provide might not be enough for people on this forum to give you good advice.

Finally, even after talking to your reseller, do contact Symantec Licencing which is the final authority on licencing matters to confirm that you are on the correct path.
