What is the purpose of BESR Windows Small Business Server Edition?

Gil Dachler's picture

Hi,

I downloaded a trial for one of my SBS 2003 machines but found out, that this product does not seem to have anything to do with backups for Small Business Servers. It's painted like a kids programm to copy musik and video files to another disk. No way to select my streamer as backup device, no way to select one of the SBS databases for backup. I guess, Symantec is lost in the variety of products, brands and versions. The time it takes to find out which software stands for which purpose  is quite analog  to the time it takes to find this forum on Symantecs web site.

Please, what is the purpose of this "Small business server" software compared to Backup Exec für Windows Small Business Server or Backup Exec für Windows Server? And what is the current version of BESRWSBSE? 2010? 12.5? Or 8.5 as it is said in the download section?

Thank for leading me out of that confusion... ;)

Regards,
Gil

clarification

First of all Backup Exec and Backup Exec System Recovery are to different solutions.

BE: data backup solution
BESR: complete system recovery solution

current BE version: 12.5
current BESR version: 2010

In case of both products, the small business editions can only be installed on small business servers.
BE for SBS has also a special licensing model (e.g. already includes the exchange agent) and is limited in licensing expansions.
I think, BESR will be handeled quite the same. I'm in tech support and therefore not really into the whole licensing topics.
In my opinion, the general functions are the same for all versions (SBS or not SBS), there are only differences in licensing.

I think what you need is Backup Exec 12.5.

I'm still something missing. If BESR is a complete system recovery solution for Small Business Servers, where are the options for backing up Exchange Server or SQL Server or the options of making an image? Within the downloaded trial version the only thing I can select is to backup some files to some other location (a tape drive obviously is not intended as backup location, which would be reasonable if BESR is supposed to be an imaging software)?

I don't find any hint for BESR being a system recovery solution for SBS? Is it the wrong software that is provided at your download section?

Thanks and regards,
Gil

stick with BE

You can create an image of the entire system. Exchange is backed up in this case, too.
What you cannot do is to only create an backup image of the exchange.

If you want to backup the exchange and the sql separately, you should stick with Backup Exec.
Also the possibility of restoring individual elements out of an exchange backup are much more comfortable in Backup Exec.
You can do it in BESR, too but it is not that nice, beacause you have to restore the element into the file system and mail it to the mailbox. No possibilty to restore directly into a mailbox.

And it's not ,my download section, as I am not working at Symantec. ;)

Hope this information helps you answereing your questions.

not really clear

At the moment, I am not really sure.
reports vary from December to end of January.

BUT:

If you download a trialversion from symantec.com, it is statet as version 2010!?

Problem:

Customers do not have the appropriate license key. Pherhaps you can upgrade the license key with help of Symantec customer care, but I cannot say for sure.
Also in fileconnect, I have not been able to download it till today.
