  • 1.  What replaces ghostsrv.exe in DS 7.1?

    Posted Aug 03, 2012 11:02 AM

I have been tasked with finding a technical replacement for GSS.  We currently use ghostsrv.exe and ghost.exe (booted from disk/pxe) to rapidly deploy base OS images at customer sites.  I see that ghost has continued development in DM and have downloaded the trial of DM 7.1.  I need to look at the "ghostsrv.exe" side of things but can not find it.  How does DM handle the server side of ghostcast?  I am just looking at the technical side of it, I will be pushing the purchase/licensing to bean counters.  The big thing for us is that Mgmt Console setup looks a bit large for a portable approach.

    Hello chuck,

In DS, Ghost replaces ghostsrv.exe by supporting multicast functionality.

Link below has details of how to do multicast.

    Hope this helps.

So the ghost.exe does both sides of the imaging now?  Is there documentation on this new version?  The documentation for ghost installed with Altiris is for 11.5 and still references ghostsrv.exe for the "server" side of imaging.  I would be very interested in the switches you use to do this "server side" of ghostcasting.

    Thanks,

    Chuck

    Hello,

The change I mentioned was from DS7.1sp2. If you are observing version 11.5 in documentation then that is earlier version. I am not sure where ghostsrv.exe is located in that.

DS Beta 7.5 is released. You might want to give check that.

    Thanks,
    Sachin

Thanks for the followup.  I can't find where to download the beta of 7.5 but since that is what should be available in the time frame of us moving off GSS that would be excellent to evaluate.  As far as 11.5 versus DS 7.1.  I am running the trial version of 7.1 (I assume sp2, since I downloaded it last week).  What I was referring to was the ghost documentation included with that DS 7.1 trial version.  It indicates it is the ghost 11.5 manuals.  Regardless, the 7.5 beta would be great to try and in the meantime if you can point me to the documentation for the ghost.exe that is in DS 7.1 it would help as well.

Thanks again for the great followup.

    Hello Chuck,

Once you install DS 7.5 from https://symbeta.symantec.com with documentation. You have to open the help & search for "ghost" in thats. You will find detailed information for ghost there along with commad-line switches.

Same thing applies for 7.1, assuming that you have the latest one installed. Please confirm the DS build number.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,
    Sachin
