What is replacing Altiris Recovery Solution : DLO ?

Hello,

I'm looking for a solution to backup remote laptops not 100% connected to our corporate network. Best solution would have been something like Recovery Solution (backup in the background and transparent streaming back to main office, with resuming).

I don't know if a replication tool could be better (it seems to be easier to backup to tape later with our main tool).

Best would be a software with good integration with Altiris solution (client management and workflow).

Have you got a similar need ? Have you implement a solution like Symantec DLO ?

Thanks for your feedback,

NH

We are testing DLO for backup VIP Laptop : we had looked at Recovery solution, but it was to complex for our needs.

DLO is more simple (infrastructure is light) but it's has not the same features :

- DLO is coming from backup Exec not Altiris : there is no integration with Altiris (perhaps in the future, Symantec announce us 2 years ago, that all products will be integrated in the console...)

- we used it to backup Data, not system or applications : on this perimeter, the product is running well.

so it's a good product for this (backuping data on laptop, simple to install, transparent for end-user (our choice was to completly hide client)...but totally not integrated with altiris. Now, if you're a good developper, it's certainly possible to launch DLO jobs from a wrokflow, but we are always in Altiris 6.5, so not tested :-)

Thanks David for this feedback.

Are you retrieveing backups from the laptop in a "storage file" or are you using the replication feature to recreate the directories of the machines (and then use your backup software to store to tapes the files) ?

Users ask me to retrieve files up to 5 years old, so using the replication feature seems to be the easiest way...

I am in the same boat. We have been using Recovery Solution for years and we LOVE IT. Symantec does not have a replacement solution for machines that are not always on the network. They should EOL BERS and further develop RS. I am very disappointed in their decision. We started looking at CrashPlan as an alternative.
