It's not the right directory where it's installed and I'm not sure where it's getting that path.

I'm getting the same error message with a different path when trying to install SP1.
Error 1314: The specified path \\\D$\Database is unavailable.
The install progress bar is about 25%, status says Creating Folders.
Put my Enterprise support contract to use.
The fix on my Windows 2003 Standard system was to search c:\windows\installer (The installer directory is a Protected operating system file, you have to uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option under Folder Options to see it) for a file named BEInstParams.prm. Rename it to BEInstParams.old and run the Service Pack install again.
After nenaming the file Service Pack 1 installed normally.
Thanks. That worked for me.
Worked for me as well with Backup Exec 12.x SP2 64bit
