When to run Disk defragmentation utility for EV VaultStore & index partition ?

This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hi People,

Can anyone please suggest me whether the Disk Defragmentation utility is still needed or not for the below partition:

  • Closed VaultStore partition 1 - 17 each 1 TB in size (Collection just Enabled last week) (NTFS drive)
  • Open VaultStore partition 18 - 1.5 TB in size (Collection Enabled) (CIFS share on EMC Data Domain)
  • Index partition 2 TB (NTFS drive)

when is the best time to run the defragmentation process as well ?

Things like your EV data partitions are written to 'only once'.  So you shouldn't see much fragmentation on that side of things.  Index locations maybe more so, over time.

I wouldn't normally suggest defragmentation, servers and disks are generally super-fast enough these days. However, if you insist, or what to check, I'd install one that will allow you to REPORT on fragmentation, and then you can monitor it over time, and decide yourself whether to run it in 'real' mode or not.

PS Certainly NOT every week.. that would be crazy.

Refer the following forum discussion

Running defrag on the closed partition would not have any impact as such but Active martition might have some.I would recommend to run the defrag by putting Ev in backup mode.

Thanks for the clarification guys.

Because I have just converted those closed partitions into Collections I just wonder if I can do anything to improve the access time for the file & email recall.

I guess putting it into the backup will make the archive item queueing up in the journal mailbox due to Backup also making the EV into backup mode as well.

Kind regards,
