When should I see SylinkReplacer results?

Created: 23 Jan 2013 | 9 comments

Hi,

I just ran the SyLinkReplacer tool to fix a problem I've been having with clients registering in my SEPM. I have groups as shown below:

My Company

    Default

     Laptops

               Allowed

               Restricted

     Workstations

               Allowed

               Restricted

My plan is to run the tool, using the sylink file from the Default Group, and then move clients to the appropriate groups as needed.

My question is:  How long will it be before I see systems showing up in the SEPM? I know, "it depends", but I would think someone who's run this tool must have some idea of how long it took on their system.

Clients should check in immediately after having their sylink replaced since smc is restarted.

Please click the "Mark as solution" link at bottom left on the post that best answers your question. This will benefit admins looking for a solution to the same problem.

What SEPM version are you using - in 12.1 RU2 there is a easier and more straight forward solution than sylink replacer:

As for your question as soon as SMC restart completes the client should report back to SEPM - to the already new group. Occasionaly they may be problems with SMC restart on the clients - reboot of the machine will accomodate that.

Hmm. . . They are not.
It's been over an hour and I do not see any of the PC's that were in the success.log indicated as in the default group.

btw - we're not on RU2 yet.

Can you check on one of these clients - what group assignemend it shown in the client GUI and if SMC service is running?

Not the one that in the sylink file.
Not even when I import it via the help\troubleshooting window.
Non even when after that I to the smc -/stop/start

Please ensure the Tamper protection is disabled on the clients - this may block the new sylink from applying - have a look here as well:

Someone else here said that the sylinkreplacer may not be working properly. On XP clients it seems to be replacing the one in the progfiles\..\..\bin folder when it should be replacing the one in all users.

Isn't reason for using the Sylinkreplacer tool so that you don't have to disable tamper protection? If tamper protection was disabled then I could just stop service, replace file, start service.

I need to quickly now how I can deploy an updated sylink file to all my clients. Unfortnautely, they are running v11.5, 11.7. and 12.1.

So how do I replace the file if I can't use this tool?

Thanks,

I certainly seems odd that the Skylinkreplacer tool doesn't work. I witnessed it here and then found references to the same on this forum. But that's all in the past now.

My issues turned started when my SEPM server was originally a replication partner of the SEPM environment of our parent company. Replication was broken but the partners on both ends weren't removed so my sylink file still had all the other servers in it.

By disconected clients were actually connecting back to the parent company SEPM. We ended up employing a powershell script that copies some batch files the the PC that the script then "remote executes" on that client to stop svc/copy file/start svc. This is working.

Thanks,
