Where to begin with Mac OS X
Created: 30 Aug 2010 | 10 comments
Has anyone tried and been successful pulling an Image from a Mac and deploying it out to others. We recently set up our Deployment Solution 7.1 and I was able to get the Altiris agent installed on the Mac but I do not know where to go from here. Does Mac OS just take the Linux Automation Folder? Basically any information that will help me take 1 of these iMacs and be able to pull an image from it and then deploy it to the 100 or so iMacs I need to image. They will be running OS 10.6.x if that is of any concern. I have looked for information but cannot find anything helpful.
Thank you.

Currently DS 7.1 does not
Currently DS 7.1 does not support Mac imaging. DS 6.9 must be used to do this. With CMS 7.0 you can perform all other management functions on the Mac (Inventory, Software Deployment, Patch, etc.)

Is this feature forthcoming?
Andrew, is this feature forthcoming? I wasn't aware that DS 7.1 didn't allow Mac imaging, since Symantec Education doesn't cover Mac at all in the Deployment and Imaging training course. Or any of the other courses. I'll be honest, my training experiences were great, but only for Windows. It was a disappointment to not cover Mac.

Yes, Mac imaging on DS 7.x is being developed as we speak. It won't be ready in time for our release in 2010 but will be ready next year.
I'll send your feedback to the training team and see what their plans are to include more non-Windows management training...

Friday afternoons
Definitely the kind of stuff to include as part of an optional Friday afternoon activity. Most trainers get the class done by noon on Friday for those who have flights to catch, which means brainy students can tackle topics without broad applicability during Friday afternoons.

I know there are discussions
I know there are discussions in the DS group about this and how to accomplish it. I've given them some input as to how they could go about it without having to do massive changes to Ghost, but from an outsider's perspective I'd guess we won't even hear about it until Summer 2011 (if we ever do)
Well then
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can make and distribute an image of these iMacs even if it means taking a USB Hard drive or two and imaging it with a boot utility of some sort. There is no way I can upgrade a 100 or so iMacs to Snow Leopard and install all the new software by hand. I did that on one and it was a 3 - 4 hour process.
a copy of OS X Server and
a copy of OS X Server and Deploystudio
That would be great
If we had a MacOS server and since these iMacs are split up across three schools I essentially would need three. I do not think I would be able to convince my boss to pop for that. He would make me do it all by hand first.
You don't need much in the
You don't need much in the way of hardware; a Mac Mini server with 4 GB RAM would do the trick just fine, and you can have on-site replicas (I'm assuming you have a WAN connecting the schools).
You can make it even cheaper by buying older hardware.
Second vote here for DeployStudio
DeployStudio works great, and can deploy your ghost universal image of Windows into Bootcamp/Parallels at the same time. Also extremely helpful for setting up Open Directly to manage your Mac environment. I'm not sure I'd choose to use anything else.
