The initial forum https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/why-are-products-being-generated-automatically-am7 is locked due to age so I'm posting what I've recently found out.

The original comment about shutting down the 'data summary provider' process and stopping the import of that data into the catalog  had already been tried and did not stop whatever was showing up. It was determined that the components that were associated to the mysterious products, were being generated by the patch management and other solutions. The Inventory Specialist told me these are supposed to work this way and that trying to modify the products so that they sort to the bottom of the Software Product Licensing Compliance report and from the filter for specific words on the list of Products, will not work either. These processes will revert the name of the products.

The 'solution' was to submit feature requests. I've submitted three of them either directly or indirectly related to these auto generated components and products.

I don't have Patch and cannot analyze this problem. Is there a way you can provide a sample data on this?

It will require XML exports of:

1. A software product with your above-mentioned problem
2. All the software components being associated with this software product

If you could upload a zipped file with all these exported xml files, I may be able to dig out something. Thanks!

You could do something like...

Cloning the report and adding a parameter that fits what you need or change the sql to something that excludes those.

I have attached an example.  It just needs to be imported into your SMP.  Let me know if that does what you are looking for.
