Why do I get error a00081d9 - job engine not responding after restore

Hello,
I am running W2K SP3 server with BENT 9.1. rev. 4691.
When I run a restore job, it takes several hours before the data is actually restored.
The restore job stops at 99% and I have to manually cancel the job. The restored file is fine.
Then, later in the evening, my daily backup job stops after backing up a few Mb.
Error a00081d9.

I had this two times over the last 3 month :
After a restore, the backup job hangs and I have to retart BENT services.
Any idea ?

Hello,

Please check out for any alerts in the Alerts Tab in backup exec. Also repair the backup Exec database with the help of the following document if you have backup exec installed on the MSDE instance:

http://support.veritas.com/docs/265180

Also, does the issue only occur during the restore operations? Do the backups run alright?

Thank you for pointing to the repair database. I just ran this action now.
I am currently restoring a file and post the results tomorrow.

My backup jobs usually run well. It is only after a restore that the next time my backup jobs are scheduled they fall in error.

As stated in in my previous post, the restore job actually does write the file from tape to the redirected location, but stays in a rinning status with 99% completed.
I have to manually cancel the job. Next time the restore hangs at 99%, I'll check for any alerts waiting to be answered.

Restore job still hangs at 99%, but the file is well restored on disk.
No messages in the "Alert" tab.

After reading http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/192055.htm , I tought my problem could be related to a "eject media after job completion".
But I have no tape alert.
Whorst, I am running a robotic library Compaq SSL2020, and I cant' find where I enable this option. Sounds like BENT does eject tape after a backup, but not after a restore...

So I do a manual cancel on the rrestore.
Wait tonight to see if the scheduled backup runs or fails again.

Well, the "repair databade" did not help. After canceling the restore job, all backup exec services were still running. So I left the scheduler launching the backup jobs. But after starting the first scheduled backup job, the system wrote 5Mb on tape then the job engine service stopped.
NT System Event Log show :
=====================
Event Type:Error
Event Source:Service Control Manager
Event Category:None
Event ID:7031
Date:2/9/2006

Description:
The Backup Exec Job Engine service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 4 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 0 milliseconds: No action.

Next time I have to perform a restore, I'll stop/start all services as prentive action.
Anyone having any other suggestion ?
Stefan

I also am getting a similar problem with BE 9.1. rev. 4691 on Win2003

Our normal nightly scheduled backups run fine. However, when you do a restore (which will again work fine) the following scheduled job will fail. The backup job starts, backs up around 5Mb then stops.
There are no alerts and you need to cancel the job to proceed.

It also only appears to affect the scheduled jobs in that we can run a restore, then a backup without problem but the following scheduled overnight dump fails.

This is now happening on several different severs running 9.1/v4691

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,

Since the issue only occurs during the restore, catalog folder might have gone corrupt. We could create a new catalog folder by stopping the Backup Exec services, renaming the catalog folder (in the path X:/ Programme files > Veritas > Backup Exec> Nt) restart the Backup Exec Services once that is done. You would however need to recatalog all the tapes when you run a restore.

Also refer to the following Document to get the Catalog folder back in case the issue is unresolved:
