Why do I have to run the full scan over and over to find all the viruses on my machine?

I am running Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.4 on Windows XP service pack 3. For some reason, yet to be determined, I found that my symantec protection was turned off. Once I got it turned back on I ran a full scan and it found 15 viruses which were deleted. I immediately started the scan again and this time it found 7 different viruses which it also deleted. I have started another scan and am wating on the results. My question is this: If the Symanted Endpoint Protection is really protecting my machine and i am not getting new viruses constantly, why can't the scan find all the viruses at once so that i don't have to run the scan over and over and over?

it might be possible that the virus are getting in from your network
can you run in safe mode and run a full scan ( without connected to the network)
