Why is there a Title on every post?

I think having a title on every post in a single discussion thread is confusing and silly. I know it's probably because "that's what the forum software does," but you should find a way to get rid of it. More often than not, people don't enter a title, and so it just picks up the first part of their entry in the Body. And why would you want to enter a new title on an existing discussion thread? Silly...

Same titles would look even more silly.

No, not silly....

The site refers the article by the original title everywhere.

But in all threads of the same forum/article area, it give different titles.

Imagine, a thread having 30 replies. The same title will get repeated 30 times on a single page. This would look even more silly.

Good users, knows that the Connect automatically picks up first few words as subject, so they carefully write subject of their choise, instead of automatic route.

Remove the Titles

I'm not saying to repeat the title on every post. I'm saying to REMOVE the title from every post. "Good users" don't need to create a new title on every post. It's a "discussion thread" about a single subject...the title is already set and displayed prominently at the top of the page. If the replies require a different title, maybe the reply should really be a new thread. Imagine a thread having 30 replies and each of the posters decide to put a title on their own topic. That is silly.

I'm just trying to offer suggestions to improve the forum. As I look through the posts, it's pretty clear that we don't have many "good users" because we're not using titles correctly. Rather than blame the people who post, and label them as "bad users," I thought perhaps we could get to the root of the problem.

What Looking Around wants is

What Looking Around wants is to Remove the titles from the replies and not the start of the thread. Very few give titles to their replies.

I guess the title would be

I guess the title would be there knowing that issues are handled on this site and that it would take a long several comments and to eliminate the factor of scrolling up and down regarding the topic would lessen the amount of time spent on an issue.

Title of the post is.....

I agree that a title is required to give an idea for the post but it should not be a mandatory check. It should be allowed to be skipped if the user doesnt put in anything and not get the initial words out of the post and make it look more like silly abruptly ending one liner.

De facto when AV does something, it starts jumping up and down, waving its arms, and shouting "Hey!  I found a virus!  Look at me!  I'm soooo goooood!"

.

there must be a reason why the reply threads have titles in the first place.

At a glance

I was just able to scroll through this list and at a glance was able to get the gist of the discussion -- because of the titles.

This very thread showed me how useful these titles can be.

Hmmm....titles or no

Hmmm....titles or no titles.
This would only work if the first sentence is the main subject.
Maybe for those who doesn't use the titles, have a setting to disable succeeding titles or just change the format for the titles of replies. Or make the main title a little bit darker.

The title gives us an idea of whats to come...

the titles per comment if carefully given attention would give the gist/ essence of what the person wants to relay in his comment... if we practice to put something intel-ligible there, then someone could scan the thread and get a peek on what the e-mail trail is all about...

just my thoughts...

thanks...

I agree IF the user puts

I agree
IF the user puts something useful in it.
I never do....

So why force all to do it, and 95% of it is (sorry) bull****, and you probably won't notice the 5% who put a "real" title on there now.

But if it was optional, and only displayed if there was something REAL typed in, it would have much more value....

Cheers

I think the title on the

I think the title on the first post in a thread is all thats needed as it is the subject of the thread everything below that is a direct responce to that subject therefore does not require any title

The subject matter does not change so why should there be new titles

I vote to remove the title from any responce to an existing posting
