Wild cards for snapshot ONLY user folder
Updated: 22 May 2010 | 7 comments
Hellooo...
We dosen't use Full system snapshot only Partial. And to not backup unneccesary data I try to specify the user folders and the user folders only.
So I specified the:
C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\My Documents
C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Desktop
C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Favorites
And then of course a lots of excludes.
But it seems that RS take snapshots of all data on C:\ anyway.
I think this has occured since I upgraded på 6.2 sp.3.
Can someone confirm this? Dosen't all tokens works longer in sp.3??

Hello Henrik,
My understanding was always that user-specific environment variables (i.e. %USERNAME%) are not supported, since the Recovery Agent runs as the System Account and %USERNAME% for that is SYSTEM or Network Service (??). Can you do inclusions like:
C:\Documents and Settings\*\My Documents
C:\Documents and Settings\*\Desktop
C:\Documents and Settings\*\Favorites
I haven't yet upgraded to SP3, and we do Full System Snapshots, so I haven't experimented with this. I take it from your description that the above process worked in SP2 and prior versions?
Thanks,
Kyle

Hello Kyle
So if I understand this correctly you use * as "token" and you will only get snapshots of user-folders!!
The system-folders are already excluded.
hmmm...when I use * I get an error, "Invalid path specified, must be full local path"
Hmm you're right, as I said we don't use Partial snapshots so I'm not very experienced setting them up. One way you could get around this is to use the following or a variation there-of:
https://kb.altiris.com/article.asp?article=30745&p=1
I would also add exclusions for folders named "LocalService", "NetworkService", "Default User", etc
What I tried was to add C:\Document and Settings on the Partial snapshot configuration, then on the Excludes exclude C:\ as in the article. Then add exceptions to that exclusion for folders named Desktop, My Documents, Documents, Favorites, etc.
Also see the following to allow to always include certain filetypes (like *.pst) in a partial snapshot:
https://kb.altiris.com/article.asp?article=39462&p=1
And a few other KBs:
https://kb.altiris.com/article.asp?article=30632&p=1
https://kb.altiris.com/article.asp?article=31819&p=1 (similar to the above)
Thanks,
Kyle

Wierd wierd...
I now did a comparison between 10 different machines and some of them was only backing up My Documents etc but some of them was backing up all C:\.
Properbly something with the policies I guess...
thanks Kyle, will look at your kb's
....gaaahhh....im going nuts on this.
Have looked at several clients now and all backup looks different. Some of them good, some all C:\ and some has backed all under C:\My Documents....
Henrik,
In response to your PM, to clear the C;\Program Files, C:\Windows, etc from your backups, just right-click the Cluster in the console and choose RS Tasks > Administration > Mark Files for Deletion. Add C:\Windows, etc and go from there. If you add them explicitly to exclusions then that *should* do it, but I've never tested it before to see if it actually works.
Thanks,
Kyle

Many thanks Kyle... a big star for you =)
I have now got a nice clean list for whats being backed up.
I cluded all C:\, then excluded all C:\ and in there did exceptions for what I want to backup.
The only problem now is the filetypes to exclude. Have not get it to work yet..working on it.
Thanks mate
