  • 1.  Will OPAL 2.0 support be coming to Symantec Encryption Desktop for SEDs?

We are currently running Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.2 with Encryption Management Server 3.3.2.  We have begun to use the Intel SSD Pro 2500 series SSDs for our clients who want the performance benefits of SSD and security benefits of a SED.  However, to this point we have used the ATA Drive Lock feature within the BIOS to secure the drive and maintain the drive performance.  Unfortunately, this means we have to document every drive lock key deployed manually.  We would love to integrate SEDs into the Symantec software using OPAL to lock the drives and thereby simplify central management of keys.

I have scoured the docs for our software and see no mention of OPAL compatibility.  Will this feature be added sometime soon?

    Hi, James,

Currently we do not officially support Opal v1 and v2 and here is the KB

Symantec Drive Encryption Support and Opal compliant drives
    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH203338

We expect that our later releases will support Opal v2 including also BitLocker, FileVault, native encryption but currently I am not able to provide you any official date.

Thank you for the prompt reply.  I thought so, but asking never hurts.
