Windows 7 64 bit hotfix installation issue
Created: 26 Jan 2012 | 6 comments
I am trying to apply the hotfix TECH179526 to 2 systems in my environment and having issues. Using LiveUpdate it doesn't do anything, no reponse. When I use the downloaded msi package it gives me the option to install, update, repair or remove in windows. I choose install and it has no files to install.
The environment is behind a firewall but there have been no issues in the past with doing any updates. I used the LiveUpdate on a system (XP) and it installed fine.
Any help is appreciated, I am working on getting some screen shots if needed of the errors.
Thanks

I should add that both are
I should add that both are 12.5 Biuld 442.
Ok the issue is that pca doesn't install LU properly on win 7
You will need to install LU manually to get it working and or you need to install the updates to 463 (sp2) and then 486 (sp3) and then run the msi.
pcanywhere 12.5 build 442 although the latest full installer isn't windows 7 compatible that is why Live update doesn't install correctly or at all and then probably isn't working. Check the following 2 kbs on updateing to pcAnywhere 463 and then to 486 then run the msi again and check the version number of your awhlogon.dll to make sure it is now at 12.5.1.500. (hotfixversion)
This first kb talks about LU and gives you the option to install it but I would recomend just getting the 463 file and running it on your 442 machines.

This kb talks about LU also but has an attachment of build 486 (sp3) once you are up to build 463 then run this 486 update.

Once you are up to build 486 then you can run the MSI file update that is included in the hot fix kb.
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH179526
when you are done confirm that your awhlogon.dll is up to build 12.5.1.500 as noted at the end of the kb.
Verifying the update
To verify the update, check the file version of C:\Program Files\Symantec\pcAnywhere\awhlogon.dll as follows:
pcAnywhere

Thanks for the response. I
Thanks for the response.
I applied the 463 update by running pcAnywhere_12.5_SP2.exe - rebooted. Then applied pcAnywhere_12.5_SP3.exe and rebooted.
This got me to 12.5.1 Build 486. When I went to run the msi file in the hotfix kb it gives me Modify\Repair\Uninstall options. Which option should I choose.
I did run the LUSETUP 3.3.exe and Live Update did work but it tells me that all the software is up to date even though it still says 486.
We are so close, thanks for the help so far.
what is the version of the awhlogon.dll?
what is the version of the awhlogon.dll? that is all that I am interested in according to the kb that is what is used to measure if the patch was a success. From your error of modify repaie or uninstall it sounds like you have it updated.
Since you are now on build 486, there is a new hotfix you should try that and see what the results are. This hot fix addresses more than one file look for the section on the bottom that notes Verifying the update to see that it is updated correctly after this is ran.

I couldn't get SP2 to install
I couldn't get SP2 to install on 64-bit Win 7 on top of PCA SP1 at all. Kept insisting "You must be at version 12.5.0 to install this update".
As far as the hotfix goes (non Win 7), if you applied it to ,say, SP2, and THEN upgraded to SP3, your hot fix got overwritten by the SP3 installer. And if you try to uninstall the hotfix, it will put back the original dll's -- from SP2. And if you try to repair SP3, nothing will happen. Fun, huh?
My workaround has been to check for presence of hot fix BEFORE running any SP installs; if it's there, first uninstall hot fix. THEN upgrade SP. THEN reinstall hot fix.
Good luck!
Not shure the behavior of a sp after hotfix. but glad you got it
I am not shure the behavior of a sp after hotfix. but glad you got it all the machines I have are already at sp3 and any new ones I install sp3 first, but If I run into a situation like you have I will do the uninstall first. Thanks for posting what you found back here.
cheers.
