Windows 7 RC and RS
Has anyone had any luck running RS on Windows 7 RC (7100)? I was able to get it running great on Windows 7 Beta (7000) by setting all the NS and RS executables to run in Vista compatibility mode, and setting them to automatically run as an administrator. I did have UAC disabled. The only quirky thing was an odd failure when capturing a registry snapshot (basically the first step of the snapshot, from what I can tell) about 10% of the time. If I re-ran the snapshot right away, it would run just fine.
Once I moved to the RC, the same trick is not working. The snapshot always fails 50% through the registry snapshot. I know Windows 7 isn't supported, just checking to see if anyone has had any luck or is playing around with the product yet. I haven't tried the uninstall/reinstall trick yet, but that might be my next step.
We're currently running RS 6.2 SP3.
Thanks in advance,
Andrew
Andrew you crazy guy!
Hey Andrew,
Haven't tried RS with Win7 yet...you know how slowly we move around here! Not sure where you're at with your NS 7 planning, but RS 7 is supposed to be out "by the end of the month" according to the Product Manager I spoke with last month. Maybe it will have better support for Windows 7 (though likely not "official" support since the final release isn't out yet; they will probably add Win7 support in RS 7.0 SP1 or possibly just an Agent-side hotfix, who knows).
Thanks,
Kyle

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm
I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty confident that we're all of nowhere with any NS/RS 7.0 plans right now. Hopefully the new products will support Server 2008 and x64 OSes as the sever OSes?
From what I have heard is
From what I have heard is that RS for Servers will be replaced with Symantec Backup System Recovery. It has allready an integration into NS 7. Some of our customers allready received an upgrade offer from Symantec. However at this point it is still unclear if RS for Desktops will be replaced too.

Well - some news to report on
Well - some news to report on this front. I'll start by saying our Symantec/Altiris/SoftChoice contact have basically told us "early next year" for Windows 7 support. This is, frankly, unacceptable, but that's beside the point.
BUT - the test NS/RS 6 environment I built out upgraded flawlessly to NS/RS 7. I expect much the same in production, as we're very not fancy with the configuration of our environment. RS 7 agent works great on Windows XP SP3, but when installed to Windows 7 RTM (my personal workstation) I'm just told over and over the "Recovery Agent needs to be repaired) I tried the standard repair operation, rebooted, tried a couple different compatibility modes, and still no dice. So, I know that this is not supposed to work, but has anyone else experimented and had luck?
I also tried NS/RS 6 on a Windows 7 RTM box, and while I don't get the repair notice, my snapshots are still failing 50% of the way through the registry snapshot, as I described in the original post on this thread.
Thanks,
Andrew

Same here, I've tried the same stuff you have and gotten the same messages.
Partial Snapshot
I suppose to get around the Registry snapshot issue you could try just doing a partial snapshot (I don't do those much; do they still backup the registry)? Just include C:\ in the inclusions....

If only I checked this thread
If only I checked this thread more often - that's in fact what we've started doing. I modified collections and policies such that all my Windows 7 machines get a partial snapshot only. Seems to work absolutely fine - no failures yet.
Can anyone clarifiy what the registry snapshot really is? As in, what am I missing by not performing it? I assume I've lost FSR ability, as I'm no longer grabbing a "full" snapshot, but is this like a live backup of the registry hives (as opposed to those sitting in C:\windows\system32\config)?
Thanks,
Andrew
No FSR
Andrew,
As far as I know, all you lose with a partial snapshot is as you said...you can't do FSR, and Rollback will probably also not work. If you don't use these options much, then no big deal.

Kyle
