Windows 7 supported in RS6.x? RS7? Ever? When?

This issue has been solved. See solution.

Can anyone confirm/deny the existence of a functioning client with Windows 7 support for RS6.x? If not, can somebody confirm that there will or will not definitely be Windows 7 support in RS7, ever? (Accoridng to the RC7 release notes, I don't see any sign of Windows 7 support). If so, when?

We have a bunch of systems we want to migrate to 7 pretty soon, but if we can't back anybody up, this is indeed a huge problem.

Thanks very much y'all.

J!

It works (reportedly)

John,
At this point there has not been an official statement around RS6 support for Windows 7, but my gut tells me that it would not be a huge feat to accomplish.  That being said, Symantec is focusing on the 7.x platform...but they have also committed to Windows 7/2008 R2 support in CMS/SMS 6.x by sometime next year.

On this thread, a RS user (and former work associate of mine) reports that he is using RS 6.2 SP3 to successfully perform partial snapshots of Win7 RTM machines, though the Full System Snapshot fails during the Registry dump (I suspect MS has made some rather major change to the registry or the APIs to access it possibly which breaks RS's ability to back it up).

I will ping the RS Product manager to see if I can get him to comment on this thread.

Thanks,
Kyle

Thanks! Yep, we had the same

Thanks! Yep, we had the same problem pushing the client out  the first Win7 box we tested; it failed during the registry dump as well.

We've been using RS6 for the last 2 years, and it's been great for XP, wonky on Vista (it works great when it works, but the clients periodically break for no apparent reason, and then there is nothing we can do short of a total OS reinstall to get those clients working again, hotfixes or no). Now that Win 7 is here, the boss really wants to roll 'em out - only Altiris is unlikely to work from the get-go to back anyone up.

Now we're on the hunt for new comparable backup solutions since there does not appear to be clear support (or any clear eta) for Win 7.

Thanks again for the answer Kyle. I really don't get why there isn't a clear, easy place to see an answer to this kind of question without digging through forums and release notes.

We are hoping to add Win 7

We are hoping to add Win 7 support in RS 7 (not in RS 6.x) sometime early next year.

This is disappointing. The

This is disappointing. The RTM for Win7 has been available since June or July so one would expect RS to support Win7 by now?  My company is disussing tossing RS out and is looking for an alternative that works with Win 7. Does anyone have suggestions?

We find ourselves in the same

We find ourselves in the same position as other posters in this thread.  After skipping Vista, we've been given the mandate to start rolling to Windows 7 in the next couple of weeks.

I'm not sure why Symantec has chosen to not keep Recovery Solution current, but it is a bad decision.  We cannot wait for 'sometime next year'.  We're looking for a replacement backup solution now.

ditto on "find ourselves in the same position"

Windows 7 is going to be aggressive in our environment and Recovery Solution has been identified as a hold up.  We may have to consider moving to another method of backing up data as well.

We are using RS 6.2 SP3 and we successfully perform partial snapshots of Win7  machines.
For Full System SnapShot , it failed during the dump of the registry, so we tried to repair the Recovery Agent installation.

I don't know what is the difference between a first installation of recovery Agent and a repaired installation but the FSS finished completely on a repaired installation.

Did you try a repair ?

The reason RS 6.x can't do a

The reason RS 6.x can't do a registry dump is Microsoft removed the COMPONENTS hive from HKLM.  So, to fix it, just load the COMPONENTS hive just beneath HKLM.  RS will do a full snapshot after that.

The hive can be found at %system32%\config\COMPONENTS.

Nice!

Trevor,
How did you come by this bit of info?  RegMon?  In any case, nice bit of information!  Can you just make a dummy key for COMPONENTS under HKLM?  Or maybe wrap up the snapshot into a batch, VBScript, or PS script that loads that hive using reg.exe (or via script), takes the snapshot, then unloads it again?

Thanks,
Kyle

Replying to myself...

I fired up my Win7 test box and tried in, and sure enough the snapshot failed.  Interestingly, I checked HKLM and the COMPONENTS key was already loaded.  I ran a manual FSS and it worked.  I'll have a to try rebooting and give it another go.

Thanks,

I also tried this

Just wanted to chime in that i also tried this and no dice. However we are using RS 7.0.3333 and my test machine was 64-bit (not sure if that makes a difference). We have not even been able to get RSagent to install correctly in order to attempt a snapshot. After installing running a snapshot of any kind fails from the console and running a snapshot from the client prompts a message saying that an operating system upgrade has been detected and RSagent needs to repair itself....The repair completes but the error continues.

Has anyone had any luck running any sort of snapshots on windows 7 x64 machines using RS 7?

RS EOL'd

John (et al):
As I'm sure you've seen, RS has been End-Of-Lifed by Symantec, effective 1/4/2010.  See AKB 50128 for additional details.  I would look to Rene to comment on future development of RS.  Above he mentions "hoping" to implement Win7 support in RS 7.0 early in 2010.   I suspect little, if any, additional development of new functionality will be implemented for RS 6.2 (though Engineering support of hotfixes will continue through Nov 2010).  RS is still a viable/supported product through November 2012 (for RS 6.2 SP3) and July 2013 (for RS 7.0) per the EOL article in the KB.  Also as mentioned on another thread, you may still buy additional RS for clients licenses throughout the supported period, but no new sales of RS to new customers will occur as I understand it.

Thanks,
Kyle

Win 7 support

Even though we have EOL'ed Recovery Solution we are already working on adding Win 7 support to RS 7 (not to RS 6.2.x) around the beginning of Q2 '10.

Rene, Do you know if you will

Rene,

Do you know if you will be adding support for both x64 and x86 platforms? Currently in our environment we are using RS7 and have not even been able to get the x64 agent to install correctly on 64 bit Windows 7 clients. The loose timelines are greatly frustrating my project manager, we looked at BESR but that does not seem to use d-dup and also is not easily managed from the console (files exclusions and so forth are all done client side).

We would much rather have RS simply work but are now forced to bring in other vendors such as Atempo and Commvault who are already compatible because we cannot continue to push our deployment of Windows 7 back. I feel that Symantec/Altiris have really dropped the ball in the Enterprise backup department.

Sincerely,

Andy

Andy, RS 7 will support both

Andy,

RS 7 will support both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7.
Of course if you must have your existing Win 7 machines protected in the next two months then you are certainly entitled to BESR 2010 that support Win 7 already and that integrates nicely with NS/SMP 7.

Rene
