Windows 8 not compatible with endpoint version 11.0.5002.333

This issue has been solved. See solution.

I am a retired Government employee working as a contractor for the Government and using the "home use" version of Endpoint Protection downloaded from the gov't site.  I have version 11.0.5002.333 and it is working perfectly, however when I started to upgrade my laptop to Windows8, an error/problem notice appeared stating that my current version of Symantec Endpoint was not compatible with WIN8.  How do I upgrade to the version that will work with WIN8 since I do not have a serial number.  When we downloaded this software, we were never given a serial number.

The only supported SEP version for Windows 8 is SEP 12.1.2

Correct. Windows 8 is not compatible with 11.0.5002.

It is only compatible with SEP 12.1 RU2 and onwards.

Please note Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 systems are only supported by SEP 12.1 RU2 or later.

...unfortunately as you got on the error message SEP 11 RU5 or as well any other 11.x Version won't be compatible with Windows 8.

If you have a support contract with Symantec you can contact the helpdesk and request the for access to the newest SEP Version.

you are running very old version. see this -

Why not upgrade to sep 12.1 online free, see this -

and then download sep 12.1 and then migrate using best practices.

What we've all been trying to avoid addressing is how you might obtain the new version blush

From the sounds of your situation, we cannot really advise how you might go about getting the latest version, as it is unclear if you are covered by the licenses owned by your former employer.  If you are covered, then you might be able to contact them for the latest version (if they've upgraded themselves).

However, my recommendation would be to investigate the Norton product instead for "home use":
