Windows configuration settings for windows 7

  • 1.  Windows configuration settings for windows 7

    Hello

We using Deployment solution 7.6. We have two local administrator account with customise windows settings like Desktop icons, pin application to quick launch bar, taskbar configuration, notification are configuration are etc etc.

We have captured image with these customise settings but after deploy image and logged into domain credentials we are not getting these customise settings like desktop icons, desktop background, task bar, quick launch settings etc.

What we can do so that customise setting should remain same as default settings for all logged in users.

    Hi Vikas1101.

The sysprep doesn't clean informations like you typed. Are you sure about logging in the computer using the same profile?

Also navigate in profile folders and check if the icons are in the folders as you done before capture the image.

    Regards,

    Hi Fernando

Let me clear in simple word..

We set customise settings for Local administrator user and capturing the image. We need after deploying this image and when we logged into by domain user at that poing customise settings which we set for local adminiistrator should reflect for domain user as well. Setting like, IE settings, Chrome Settings, Dekstop icons and shortcuts, Task bar configuratio, etc etc

    Regards

The Microsoft approved method is this: 1. Log on to Windows by using the built-in local Administrator account (not a domain account) ... 2. Configure the settings that you want to copy to the default user profile. This includes desktop settings, favorites, and Start menu options. ... 3. Create a Unattend.xml file that contains the Copy Profile parameter (Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup\CopyProfile). ... 4. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: %systemroot%\system32\sysprep\sysprep.exe /oobe /shutdown /generalize /unattend:c:\answerfile\unattend.xml https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/973289

You don't restart, you take image and deploy with new unattend.xml file to another computer.

You need to download and install the Windows AIK and use the help guide supplied with that to create your own, it needs details in such as your organisation's product key and domian account info to join the domain. There may be a template one supplied with DS 7.6 you can modify.

I'm not sure if IE settings, Chrome settings and other kind of configurations you can set for all users.

Some configurations like IE favorites, desktop icons you can set that accessing the default profile folders. (C:\Users\Public)

Sample: You can copy the default Company Icons and paste in the "Public Desktop". This folder means that all icons inside this folder will be replicate for all users logged in the computer.

    Great.

Some configurations you can set using the Public Profile such as desktop icons and favorites bar. Other things you can't because of OS limitation. In this case, you have to find other way to do that.

Do you have Altiris installed in your environment? If so, you can create some policies and apply to computers when users log in.

I was plagued with this.. you should only have one account ie administrator. If you have more than one account delete all but the default Profile and the Administrator properly via the  User Profiles Tab in System Properies.

If you only have the both listed check to see if you have another profile listed in your regsitry profile list HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

You will find a number of default profiles there but there should only the Administrator account you used to configure the profile. It will be named under ProfileImagePath  C:\Users\administrator.

Copy Profile in Sysprep fails if there is more than one profile entry here.

Another time I saw this error was when I was using the a token replacement to use the BIOS Asset Tag as the Computer Name.. which in this case was blank in the BIOS after an engineer swopped the Mother board out and left the Asset Tag blank.

Hope this helps.. I got to really hate this error as originally I was blaming the Token replacement :(

Indeed, as it says in the support article I linked to: "Open the User Accounts control panel, and remove all added user accounts except for the one Administrator-level user account that you used to log on to Windows.

    Hi Vikas1101.

First of all, I not consider that as a issue, but a OS limitation.

Per example, you can create a task to run a script on the computer set some IE configurations, like set Proxy settings automatically. After that, you can create a policy and add this script in the policy and set a schedule to run every user login in the machine.

Probably in this way can overcome of some OS limitations and achive your goal.
