Windows Security Center reports Virus Protection: Off

Created: 13 Jun 2009 • Updated: 21 May 2010 | 4 comments

Although my virus protection is working (I tried downloading the Eicar test virus and it caught all forms) I always have a Windows Security Alert and the Windows Security Center reports that Virus Protection is off.

Does anybody know what's up with that and how to turn off the Alert?

I'm running Endpoint Protection 11.0.4000.2295, Windows XP SP3 with latest updates.

Thanks!

This was a bug that has been fixed in MR4Mp2 11.0.4202.xxx

Windows Security displays the warning "MALWARE PROTECTION out of date" after a user manually runs an Active Scan or a Complete Scan
Fix ID: 1486799
Symptom: Windows Security displays the warning "MALWARE PROTECTION out of date" after a user manually runs an Active Scan or a Complete Scan.
Solution: Symantec Endpoint Protection was modified to allow the product to query the Windows Security Center information correctly.

Your problems might be fixed by the upgrade to MR4Mp2, and you should always keep updated with the latest version anyways. But you can also refer to this document I posted below. It helps in configuring SEP to work with the windows security center. Quite often the issue you are seeing is not a "bug" but instead just a configuration problem that needs to be addressed. So take a look at this document. Hopefully it helps.

So many questions!

What's "MR4Mp2"?

Shouldn't LiveUpgrade be upgrading SEP to the latest version automatically?

I tried to follow the link to configure SEP to work with WSC, but I can't find anything called "Antivirus and Spyware Policy Page", only a "settings" page, and it doesn't have a "Miscellaneous" tab. I can't find a setting to Disable/Enable WSC anywhere... Do I have a different version of SEP than that page is designed for?

Hmmm - maybe I get it. Our company runs its SEP protection as "unmanaged" clients. I'm just a lowly user, not an admin.

Well you should really contact your system administrator to have him/her do this. Depending on what access he/she has given you to your computer you might not even be able to do all of the steps mentioned in the guide I posted. Now to help with the confusion on what live update is suppose to do. Live update will update your virus definitions. These are the "rules" that allow SEP to block viruses. Liveupdate assures that you have the latest "rules" to block the latest viruses. Now MR4Mp2 is the actual version of SEP that you are running. This is the actual software you have installed and has nothing to do with how well it blocks viruses and is not upgraded by live update. We always suggest you run the latest software to help with compatibility issues and bugs that have been fixed. Your network administrator should be responsible for this, and hopefully he/she is already in the process of upgrading to MR4Mp2. Honestly as just a user in network you won't be able to do much, and you should really talk to your admin and have them take care of this issue. We all know how much they love getting questions like this into their help desks : )

Hope everything goes well,
