Windows Server 2008 host, with virtual Domain server and virtual Exchange 2010 Backup and Backup storage

Looking for a bit of advice re above.

Considering the following;

  • Full backup of the host weekly to external drive.
  • Full backup of both virtual servers weekly to external hard drive
  • Daily incremental backup of both virtual servers to online storage.

By using 2 drives on a rotational basis, one offsite, hoping to be able to recover from any disaster with this setup.

Questions are

  1. Is the above feasable with BackUp Exec and what addons would be required
  2. Is it possible to save only the daily incremental backups online and recover from weekly virtual machine backups from external drive and daily incremental backups stored online.
  3. Would it be possible to recover individual mailboxes

Any alternative suggestions?

License-wise you'd need the following:

1 x Media server license for your media server

1 x Agent for Microsoft Exchange Servers

1 x Remote Agent for Windows Servers (for your DC)

These agents give you file-level restores. if you want to backup the full VMs then you'd need the AVVI/Hyper-V agent depending on your hypervisor.

Just note that Symantec don't recommend running BE on a virtual server and will ALWAYS point you in the direction of a physical server to fulfill this role!

You should be able to point your backups to online storage. But, check out the BE 2010 SCL and make sure your online backup vendor/application is supported. Otherwise backing up to those local disks would be fine.

With the Exchange agent, and GRT turned on you can recover individual mailboxes, no hassles. But GRT MUST be turned on to do this.
