I have a test environment, were i have Backup Exec 2012 R1 installed on a Server 2008 R2.

I know that Backup Exec 2012 R2, will be released soon.

My question is, why can i install windows agent on a Windows 8, and on a Windows Server 2012 Datacenter, and not on a Server 2012 Standard?

After  installing the agent on a Windows 8, and W2012 Datacenter, i can backup and restore any thing, including SDR.

What is the difference between Datacenter and Standard, for Backup exec 2012?

Not sure why the installer blocks some and not others - however the agent is ONLY supported on any form of Windows 2012, with the SP2 release - which is not on public release yet. (Beta has started)

Also please bear in mind that SP2 and R2 are completely different things

SP2 is a service pack which adds basic Agent support for Windows 2012, VMware 5.1 support and various bugfixes etc

R2 is the probable next name for a complete release of Backup Exec - which will add media server support for Windows 2012 and have numerous other changes.
