Windows Server Restore

Created: 28 Nov 2012 | 1 comment

Hi, I am looking for a best practice to setup backup jobs for Windows server. I am running two backup jobs currently, Daily and Weekends.

The daily job backup “System State” and “Shadow Copy Components only

The Weekend job backup “System State”, “Shadow Copy Components" and contents of C:\drive excluding C:\Temp, C:\Windows\Temp\ and C:\Users

With the above backup work in case server is crashed and if I got blue screen of death. I never did recovery however this is what I plan to do.

Build the windows server from CD, restore it from Weekend backup job and override the “System State”, “Shadow Copy Components" using daily job.

Thank you

1) When you exclude the \users directory, you are excluding the users' profile.  You might have a problem logging in.

2) If you do do any updates in the middle of the week, your might get a mismatch between the contents of your C: drive and the system state when you do the restore that you planned.

If you are concerned about the size/time of a full backup of the C: drive during weekdays, it would be better to do either an incremental or a differential backup, rather than skip it altogether.
