File Share Encryption

I have a computer with Windows Vista Business and PGP WDE 10.1.1.  The computer started a simple Windows update yesterday, but ran into a snag with WDE part-way through.  As the computer was shutting down, it automatically started installing three updates.  When updated 3 or 3 finished, the encryption kicked in a asked for the encryption key.  After the key was entered, it went back to update 3 of 3, finished the update, and then jumped back to they encryption key page.  It has been going in circles like this ever since. 

Has anyone experienced this?  Does anyone have any thoughts on what the cause and solution might be? Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

You may need this Knowledge Base Article for decryption of the machine, either by attaching the disk to another machine, or use of the WDE Recovery CD.  If you do use the WDE Recovery CD for decryption, be aware that decryption must not be stopped for any reason before it completes, it can take days for decryption depending on your hardware, it is not complete when it says 0% still encrypted, and that when it is complete it will tell you so.

Is this a common problem with the particular WDE program, or is it common with all types of WDE programs?  We need encryption for our computers that don't have built-in TPMs, but have been a bit unhappy with PGP WDE so far.

I have actually never heard of this happening before.  I do Windows updates all the time on my WDE encrypted machines and have never had a problem with doing so.  Of course, updating to a new Windows version such as Vista to 7 must not be done without first decrypting the disk.  Personally, I would not even assume that your difficulty was caused by WDE, but then I guess I am biased.

you will need either to look for the way con cancel Vista updates process, or decrypt the drive and let update finish. Then encrypt back.
