    Ian,

We are running 3 seperate 8380 Brightmail gateway appliances. 2 are scanners and one control center. They are all on v7.7.0-17.

My question is regarding Brightmail Gateway Virtual Edition Evaluation Program.

Is it possible to add another scanner using a windows vm version and add it to our existing redhat appliance setup?

Hopefuly my question makes sence and if not I will try and re-word it.

I hope you don't mind my answering.

As long as the virtual machine is supported than yes that should be Fine.  Since you mentioned a windows VM I'm going to guess that this is VMware Server for windows is that correct?  If this is the case support will only provide assistance if the server is setup for testing only, no production.

    Thank You,

    John

    John,

No problem that your answering my question. I'm new to this forum so wasn't sure who to address the question to.

Yes, the vm server for windows will be on an existing production v3 ESX box within our network.

The idea would be to test a fair amount of production email traffic. The idea and objective is to evaluate wheather we want to continue using the 4 year old 2950 hardware or buy new hardware or move everything over to a vmware windows servers on a ESX environment.

Our license and support renewal is coming up March '09.

I think I understand.  You have VMware server installed on a windows box.  Your question is if you can install a scanner on the windows VMware server then add that to your control center?

If that is the case I'll have to defer to Ian for a response as I've never had any use this scenario in the past.  I know as of version 7.7 we now support a mix of hardware and VM for Implementations but as far as mixing ESX and Server that is really a question I can't answer.  Honestly we will not support a scanner on VMware Server in production.

I hope this helps a little and will await your response.

I'm reading the question a bit differently, so I figured I might as well add to the answer in case it's helpful:

Sounds to me the question isn't VMware ESX vs Server, rather running Linux appliance vs Windows VM. If that's the case, please note that the VE appliances are Linux just like the hardware appliances, not Windows. So it sounds to me the real question is whether you can mix and match virtual appliances and hardware. As John wrote, the answer is 'yes' with the lastest updates.

(In fact, if I didn't know better, the question truly reads that you're looking to run a VM on VMware Server in a Windows VM on ESX. If so, that's a highly curious config, so I assume not.)

    Doni and John

Thanks for your responses and you both answered the question I should have originally asked.

    VE is Linux.

    Next questions (scary!)

    1) Can the 30 eval be extended?

    2) Virtual versus Physical! What kind of feedback are you recieving from your existing customer base?

     and what are the
