WINDOWS XP system restoration points

Created: 26 Dec 2012 | 6 comments

My company recently procured Symantec ENDPOINT PROTECTION as a campus wide antivirus & network threat protection.  I have it installed on my WINDOWS 7 desktops & also my older XP laptop.  I recently attempted to restore my XP laptop to a previous restore point, and to do so I had to completely disable ENDPOINT PROTECTION.  Is this necessary or is there a fix for this?  Moreover, is this an issue on WINDOWS 7 machines as well?

What is the exact version of SEP that you are using?

Why did have to disable SEP, did you receive some sort of error when trying to do a system restore with SEP enabled? Was there anything in the logs? Can you share a screenshot of the issue?

There should be no reason to disable SEP in order to do a system restore normally, we do it all the time and SEP plays no role in it whatsoever.

Hi,

Thanks for the writing your query in Symantec community.

There is not any known issue with SEP while doing restore of  XP laptop to a previous restore point.

You can check SEP fix notes here:

Windows 7 is supported from SEP 11 release update 5 onwards. However I would suggest to use latest SEP version.

SEP 11.x latest version is SEP RU7 MP3

SEP 12.1 latest version is SEP 12.1 RU2

Check till date SEP release here: http://bit.ly/m0vOJp

Chetan,

That sure is ODD since when I enable ENDPOINT I cannot restore to a previous date, but I can if I disable it 100% of the time. Moreover, I posted this info to MICROSOFT forums & they did know of this issue. They no longer support XP any longer, but they are aware of the issue & elaborated on the cause.

I contacted our IT Dept on this issue. So I think as a SYMANTEC representative you need to investigate this further!

Brian & Chetan,
Below is the response from Microsoft. NOTE:the link they refer to is directly from your company so Chetan you need to get up to speed! I have not bothered to uninstall & reinstall ENDPOINT per their suggestion to reactivate ENDPOINT. I plan to get our IT Dept involved because as you suggest this should not happen, but it does & it is UNACCEPTABLE! The version of ENDPOINT on my LAPTOP is 12.1.2015.

MICROSOFT:
Symantec does not WANT you to run System Restore. See:

For those home subscribers of Norton, this workaround exists:

You need to open a case with Symantec so they can troubleshoot further. The Symantec KB article you linked is over a year old.

Hi,

You need to open a case with support to troubleshoot further because you are facing the problem with the latest SEP version.

Upon opening a case with support please send PM to me or share the case number. We will try to look into the same.
