  • 1.  WinPE 4.0 Driver Compatability

    Posted Feb 24, 2014 07:57 AM

I am in a situation where I need, some might say finally, to upgrade my PE environment from 2.1 to 4.0.  The downside is the environment has a lot of older hardware models and I do have some concern about driver compatibility.  I understand that Vista drivers will generally work with Windows 8, does the same hold true for WinPE?  I am certain there will be exceptions but a general answer will suffice for now.

    Thanks in advance!

I doubt that you will be able to inject Vista drivers into a WinPE 4, but the upside is that for older hardware, I have been using the native NIC manufacturer drivers, which work against pretty old hardware, same as newer models.

    Hope this helps you further?

    Thank you.

I should be clear, I do not plan to extract drivers from Vista, rather use hardware manufactorer drivers which are Vista certified, thus it sounds like I at least have a fighting chance of this working.

yes, i had to use vista drivers for some of my older models (optiplex gx520 and 745 to name a few) since win7/8 drivers simply aren't available, even from intel or broadcom. works fine. for all intents and purposes, winpe4 IS win8, just without a lot of supporting backend like sound, 3d graphics, and plenty of other things. the core kernel is the same. and it's the only version of win8 i like using, since it doesn't have that horrible start screen or metro/newui. ;)
