  • 1.  WinPE with Added Driver Won't Connect to Console

    Posted Oct 04, 2010 02:32 PM

I am working remotely via RDP and running Ghost 11.5 to create a Ghost image. I am using WinPE and had to add the NIC driver for Intel 82567LM-3 Gigabit Network Connection. I am new to creating Ghost images that require a driver, WinPE etc. I believe I got the right driver in the Pre-OS and it starts from the Console but it never connects to the Console. It says "Waiting for clients to connect". The client is a Windows 2003 Server. Any idesa on things to check or how to tshoot what is going on would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance, Mikrob

I noticed that the log file says Wake on LAN - Success, Updating PreOS - Success. I looked at the PC and now it shows that it has disconnected. I'm not sure what could be causing this or where to start tshooting the problem...

    Thanks, Mikrob

I added the Disk Driver thinking maybe the PreOS wasn't getting written to the disk. I got another faliure on step on "To Virtual Partition" and thre PC has disconnected from the network. Both the Client and PC running the Console are located remotely in an office in the state next door so I have to email someone to reboot the PC when it looses connectivity to the WAN.

Is there any way you can find out what is happening on the production side?  I have had the production client produce errors where it constantly tries to apply a network address in the WinPE environment, but never connects/applies IP address from the DHCP server.

I have found this to be a problem with the Network drivers.  The drivers need to be Windows Vista, as the PE environment is built on the Vista kernel.  I am not sure about Ghost, but it could be the same thing...?

What version of the DS are you using (6.x, 7.x)?

I don't know that I'm using DS. I'm using Ghost 11.5 and used the Boot Wizard to create a WinPE PreOS for booting client machines. I started with WinPE-512 and added a NIC driver by checking it in the list of available drivers. The log file says it fails on step To Virtual Partition. I've tried several times and always get to this point and it fails.

I'll see if someone can check the system at the other end. One person said there is a debug type message on the system but didn't write it down or go into detail.

    Hi,

You are getting this error because of an outdated driver . You told that  You receive " To virtual Partition Failed " error in your console. Just make a right click on that, check the event details...you can see why exactly that error occured.

You would get this error due to an outdated network driver as well as storage driver. But mainly because of network driver. You can make use of Ghost Boot Wizard for adding drivers to WinPE. Always choose Windows Vista version of drivers for WinPE.

To make your work easier, Please visit the link below to get the latest vista version of driver for your NIC:

    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/downloads/latest-vista-version-drivers-use-gss

Downolad the driver , Extract it and add it to WinPE using Ghost Boot Wizard.

Please let me know the results...

    Regards,

    Dilip Sebastian

    Hi Mikrob,

After adding the drivers as per Dilip's message, note the name of the Windows PE package that you give. For example, you might add the drivers to the default Windows PE or you might make a copy of Windows PE and edit that. In case you edit a new Windows PE package then note the name you give in the Name section.

Once you have completed the addition of drivers to the boot package via Ghost Boot Wizard, open the ghost console and select the machine that you are trying to image. Right Click on the machine and select Properties. Go to the client tab and change the Virtual Partition PreOS to the name that was selected for Windows PE from the drop down box.

    Hope this helps !

Thanks a lot especially to Dilip for the drivers. I was beginning ti think I'd never be able to create a Ghost image using WinPE and additional drivers...

    Thanks again, Mikrob
