I've asked this before on this forum and I was hoping for some positive new information.   Will Symantec ever release a brand new version of the Wise Package Studio that includes a brand new version of the Wise Script Editor?   Or have they bought one of the best scripting tools ever and killed it for good?

Thanks

There is no positive new

There is no positive new information I can disclose, but there are never going to be "brand new" versions of either Wise Package Studio or WiseScript editor. Apart from some minor enhancements, the Wisescript of today is essentially unchanged from the Wisescript (and SMS Installer) products that were around in 1995.

Similarly, Wise Package Studio remains totally recogniseable at version 8 to users of version 3.

Personally, I still think that WPS is the best packaging tool despite the lack of updates.

We have AdminStudio 10 which

We have AdminStudio 10 which s a great product and does some cool stuff but it really stinks for creating wrappers.  Their internal language is such a PITA.   But it's current and does some cool stuff like convert .MSI's into App-V packages.

When Windows 8 comes out I wonder if Wise Script Editor will even function properly.

Wisescript editor is a true

Wisescript editor is a true 32 bit application, so I see no reason why it should fail to work with Windows 8. After all, the vast majority of applications in use today are 32 bit so Microsoft would be truly shooting themselves in the foot if their next operating system showed any reluctance to work with 32 bit programs.

What wisescript currently lacks is the ability to interface with the 64 bit file system and registry when running on 64 operating systems such as XP64, Vista 64 or Windows 7 64.  I hope this will change at some point.

I agree, Wise functions for

I agree, Wise functions for 32-bit fine. You can add actions to Wisescript and make it work for the 64-bit file and registry. I use 64-bit registry actions for every package we wrap. Edt has pointed those threads out in the past. With the ability to use Wiscript on Win 7 64-bit, I am looking at it working for newer versions of Windows in the future. If it isn't updated, it still beats nothing, which is close to what is out there for wrapping installs. Wisescript can also be used for other things such as dialog input apps, such as asking the user which location they are at and make the install use a specific MST you included for multiple sites. I couldn't like without my Wisescript. With 64-bit actions, you should be able to use it for some years to come.

I used to support windows 95/98 at Microsoft. My training still applies to Windows 7 in many areas...registry for example. I haven't seen much that would affect a tool like Wisescript, except for 64-bit, and that can be fixed with 64-bit actions and vbscripts. It would be nice to have Wisescript updated to 64-bit and to also let it incorporate Powershell, but it appears to be off of the table. I may be a Mac developer by the time Wisescript doesn't work with Windows at all...smile.
