Wise Studio Package 7.0 SP4
Any idea when Wise Studio Package 7.0 SP4 will be available for download? In the site, its mentioned that Wise Studio Package 7.0 SP4 is released on Nov 13, 2008. But the download option or the release notes are not available.
Regards,
Samuel
Can you give me the URL of where you saw this information? I have not heard about an SP4 release yet and, as you say, it does not appear to be available for download.

I've checked with Wise Support regarding the release date, and all they are telling me is that it is 'tentatively scheduled for the first quarter of 2009'. They mentioned they do not give out exact dates of a product release due to last minute changes to the product, which may push that date back.
Yes, that is pretty much the same as I was hearing at ManageFusion, hence my surprise that it's apparently being mentioned as available somewhere.

You can see the release date of SP4 at http://www.symantec.com/busine..._details.jsp?pid=56161
Thank you for providing the link. I have notified the Wise Product Manager that incorrect information is being shown on a Symantec website and hopefully this will be corrected soon.

FYI: the mention of SP4 at the link is now gone!
SP4 is still tentatively scheduled for Q1 2009.

Desperate...
Q1 has ended almost but NO new release OR SP4...
Can anyone at Wise/Altiris/Symantec give me the contact info of the Productmanager from Wise Package Studio .
I really want to know if there will be any new release...
Currently the competition (AdminStudio) is really blowing Wise away with new features , and full virtualization support ( ThinApp, App-V and Citrix XenApp.)
I make a living out of selling Wise Licenses and training... but if there is no new version coming out for the last 3 years customers are looking at the competition to see lot's of development going on there...
Please , publish a roadmap or something.
Jeroen

Hmmmm
I have emailed the product manager for Wise to check whether SP4 has actually been released for general consumption.
There was an intention expressed by Symantec to limit the availability of service packs to users with maintenance agreements, but I have not heard whether this was implemented or not, so I've asked for an update on that as well.

Not released
The Wise PM has confirmed that WPS7 SP4 has not been released.
I am still trying to find out why the KB has suddenly sprouted a product category for WPS7 SP4, with one posting attached to it - clearly if this relates to internal testing then it should not be in the public KB, but no further information is currently available.

Dire future
Something has to happen soon. The least Symantec could do is to inform us if they plan on developing on WPS or drop the product. As I see it now WPS will surely die if they don’t start communicating with the WPS community.
I wish...
The product manager has indicated that he may discuss the product roadmap with customers but only on a non disclosure agreement basis.
You can email him at michael_grueber@symantec.com should you wish to follow this course.
WPS has significantly fallen behind the competition in terms of being able to support environments such as Visual Studio 2008 and Windows 7, and the release of SP4 which was supposed to happen in Q1, has clearly slipped and no information is available publicly as to when it might appear. I too find the lack of product roadmap or any kind of communication on the product's future to be most frustrating.
Bearing in mind how long ago Symantec acquired Altiris and therefore the Wise product family, you would have expected to see some indication of their plans for the product by now. The absence of any such information cannot be good news, as no business likes to lose customer share for a product they intend to remain competitive.

Atlast..
Atlast.. hope at the end of the tunnel.. Tho I wonder how many customers Symantec lost to other packaging tools in the last couple of months.. Anyway im really excited, lets hope its not just thin air ^^.
It's just the launch
October 8th is the launch of WPS 8, but I've not heard exactly when it will be available to ship.
Does anyone know when it is scheduled to be available?

Wise Package Studio 8.0 is available
Wise Package Studio 7.0 SP4, er...I mean Wise Package Studio 8.0 is now available.
you can get it by going to the following location and clicking on the "Trialware" link toward the upper-right. (This download is the full install and also the trial, just like with Wise Package Studio 7.0).
www.symantec.com/business/products/support.jsp
The release notes
The release notes primarily list bug fixes and support for MSI 4.5, .Net 3.5 and new OSes. I use the term "new" loosely. Server 2008 has been out for some time now...
This is going to be a hard sell. I expected all of this in a free SP4 release. With Wise abandoning all Application Virtualization technologies outside of SVS, and now charging for what essentially amounts to a maintenance release, we are forced to look at InstallShield.
**Dissapointed**
InstallShield bought themselves out of Macrovision last year. I'd love to see Wise do the same from Symantec. It is the only way the product will get the attention it needs.
Our big concern is what is
Our big concern is what is the future of Wise Script Editor? Our entire packaging world is done in Wise Script Editor (the one found inside of package studio 7.x) Will this be laid to rest or does Symantec plan on continuing to use and update this tool?
WiseScript is still being developed
There are several enhancements and bug fixes listed for WiseScript in Wise Package Studio 8.00:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Icon for digitally signed executable. The Setup Icon that you specify on the Build Settings page is now associated with the program executable when you define a digital signature for the executable on the Digital Signature page.
ElseIf Statement action. An If Statement along with an ElseIf Statement now always checks the condition of the ElseIf Statement.
Execute Program action. When running an Execute Program action multiple times within a While Loop, memory leak problems occurred. This performance issue has been resolved.
Exit Installation action:
File backup. On the Backup Replaced Files dialog box, an end user can select to create backups of replaced files. If the content of a file did not change but the date/time stamp changed, the file was not backed up. This type of file is now backed up.
Appended registry value. If an installation appended a value to a multi-string (REG_MULTI_SZ) registry key, uninstalling the installation removed the entire registry key value instead of just the appended value. This issue has been resolved.
Check Configuration action. If you checked for Windows XP operating system on a computer that was running Windows Vista, the check failed. The check should have have returned true on a computer running Windows XP or later. This issue has been resolved.
43667: If you selected Initial Workbench Setup on the Projects tab and ran the Customize WiseScript template task, WiseScript Editor was started instead of WiseScript Package Editor. This issue has been resolved.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And I assume there are more than a few undocumented bug fixes (I've done little so far with version 8 of WiseScript, but have found undocumented fixes in the Windows Installer Editor).
No sign of 64 bit support though
It is a pity that the wisescript editor has not been updated to provide true 64 bit support. The list of updates provided by Evan are mostly bug fixes - there are few that I would frankly consider "enhancements". Not really enough new stuff to justify buying a new license I feel.
As an earlier poster remarked, the updates in WPS should have been released as WPS7 SP4 a long time ago.
Thise with a maintenance agreement are naturally catered for, but the remainder of users are faced with buying new licenses, which realistically means that there is a good chance of losing these users to Installshield.
Regrettably, I don't believe there is any chance of Wise buying out of Symantec, as many of the core personnel from Wise have long since moved into other areas of Symantec to further their careers.
Most users regarded Wise as being the best tool to work with, and it is a crying shame that both Altiris and now Symantec have failed to maintain product development and marketing investment to remain competitive and retain user mind-share.

Oh man, what a
Oh man, what a disappointment.. Been waiting for a new release or at least a SP4 for WPS 7 for a year or more, at long last Symantec decides to release WPS 8 and what do we get? A couple of hot fixes and that’s basically it ;(.
Only positive thing to say about the release of WPS 8 is that it’s still on the market, been considering other MSI package tools the last couple of months until the announcement of WPS 8 came around, and after trying it out, im back to where I was months ago.
These so called “changes” in WPS 8 looks more like a hotfix/ServicePack than a new major version of the product… Its beyond my imagination that anyone would release a bunch of fixes as a new major release.
A huge disappointment indeed...
Support is gone too
It looks like the "Support" for Wise products has been cancelled as well..
This is really going the wrong way...
I hope someone can buy Wise back ... ( where are the old owners from former Wise Inc.?)

Things appear to be going in the wrong direction for Wise Package Studio since Altiris and Symantec came on board.
