  • 1.  WMI Substituting Values from Localhost

I have a very odd problem with a couple devices/IP addresses and WMI queries.  When I perform a network discovery with WMI enabled against a couple IP addresses the desination will be merged with my SMP and a new GUID will be created.  These devices are hand held scanner which do not respond to WMI requests.  nbtstat does not recognize the name or MAC (name is blank and the MAC is all zeros).

When I use WBEMTest against these devices I'm provided information from the localhost.  Now I've tried this against other handheld scanners and did not get the same results; wbemtest would not connect.  With these two it connect, but connect to the localhost.  I performed a wireshark trace and found there was no communication with the destination while running wbemtest.  Wireshark does show communication with the destination when performing a ping, tracert or nbtstat.  I've tried from several sources to the same destination with the same result.

    Any suggestions?

Your devices are responding to SNMP protocol to listen on "public" community?

In general no the devices are not configured to communicate on the public community.  This device in particular is not configured or capable of communicating via SNMP or WMI.

I'm not sure then how you want to get any device information, when device doesn't work with SNMP and WMI protocols.

For such case, I think that you can try to use "Data Connector" functionality to import pre-defined .xml or .csv file in "Symantec_CMDB", where you will specify all required information about these devices (Their MAC, IP, Name, etc).

Basic example of .csv columns for further import:

Name Domain User OS Name OS Version IP Address MAC Address System Type OS Revision

I don't want to get device information from a device which doesn't respond to snmp.  I certainly don't want to get false information which is causing my SMP resource entry to be recreated because it thinks the SMP is some other device.
