  • 1.  WOL in DCM - Task Management

    Hi,
    I'm using Dell Client Manager 2.2. Sometimes I need run computer remotely. I choose properly task and... nothing. Computer doesnt start in spite of it has turn on function in BIOS.

    When I use similar task - shutdown, restart, logoff - it work correctly.
    When computer is turn off, WOL doesnt work.

    What is the problem?

    Computers Dell Optiplex GX620, 745, 755; Notebooks Latitude D620 and D630
    Altiris Agent and Dell Client Manager installed on machines

    Is this the full Dell Client Manager or the solution for Altiris? Are you using the Task Server Solution?

    Its Dell Client Manager Standard.

    So I think that beyond having WOL enabled in the bios of the client, you need to also have at least a single NS Agent client turned on, on the same subnet as the client you're trying to wake up. This other client acts as a WOL proxy. Then I think you would also want to check with your networking people to make sure the routers and switches are configured to allow WOL packets through. I've never had very good luck with WOL and IMO I don't think it's an Altiris\Symantec issue. You might want to look at trying out RTSM with a vPro enabled client. Pretty cool stuff, you still can't do bulk wake ups, but the waking up part through RTSM actually works pretty well for a single client.

    I'm not entirely positive, but the WOL proxy is a DS function, and NS WOL doesn't work *quite* the same way. I believe DS identifies a proxy machine early on, and that machine has to be on. For NS, any computer identified through basic inventory on the subnet can act as that proxy. However, it does need to be online.

    I've actually used wireshark in the past to trace this activity, but if it's going to fail, all you see is the application trying to contact the computers and then not respond.
