    Hi,

This post is to help compile a list of issues with WOL and Deployment Solution. Many of us have experienced problems with this feature, so please add your comments here so that we can see just how big an issue this is.

To start this off -here's my issue:
In our environment which has multiple subnets, we find that WOL stops working after some random time period. Looking at the agent logs reveals that at this point, the WOL proxies recieve the WOL command from the server, but the server omits to include the MAC addresses -the WOL command is completely blank. The agent logs also agree with packet inspection of the AClient traffic.

I'm looking into this with Altiris Support, but still thought it worth mentioning.

    Kidn Regards,
    Ian./

What I've seen, using the Wireshark trace, is that once a system has been identified as a WOL proxy or master, the system seems 'to remember' this. So that system always has to be on for WOL to work consistently. I've really only dived into it once, at one location, but WOL via DS really seemed to be hit or miss.

We're having a problem over here (Deployment Solution 6.9, not SP1) with the Shutdown / Restart commands. We use Novell 4.91 SP4 Clients, and when we signal for a workstation to Shutdown or Restart, they just hang at the Novell prompt waiting for you to click on it to continue the process of shutting down or restarting. It's the oddest thing, and I haven't been able to find anything on it through countless Google searches. Anyone have an idea what's causing this? We want to eventually create a shutdown / wake-up schedule but can't until this is resolved...

We are running Novell 4.91sp4 with 6.9 and have not had that problem that I know of. We have a couple of servers running the 6.9sp1 with Novell client 4.91 sp4 and sp5 without incident. It does, however take a couple of minutes or more before they decide to actually do what you told them (either restart or shutdown). I haven't seen the shutdown failure with Novell since before 6.5 or thereabouts. Good luck.

It only happens when the workstation is sitting at a Novell login prompt, if the machine is logged in and you hit the restart or shutdown it shuts down properly...

When multicast is enabled, DS generates magic packets, but all the MAC addresses are set to 00:00:00:00:00:00 so nothing wakes up. This is even when trying to wake up a single computer. When I disable multicast, everything works perfectly.
