My Workflow requests for a user to type in there firstname and surname is there a way to capture the first initial and attach to the surname to create a username automatically and then display on the same screen to the user so its under where they enter firstname and surname?

You can use the Extract text from text component to get as many letters as you like from one string, then use a Merge Text component to put the strings together.

Remember that if this is for AD, there is a limit to how many characters a SAMAccountName can be.
