Workflow Hardware Config
This issue has been solved. See solution.
We are looking at purchasing Workflow solution and we would start out with 6.5 since we're on NS 6.0.
During planning, I want to accomodate for a future upgrade to Workflow solution 7.0 and want to make sure we're in a good place for that.
I have reviewed the solution users's guide and it doesn't have any hardware specs.
Does anyone have any recommendations for this solution?
Should the hardware specs be something along the lines of:
- 8 core processors 2.8 GHz 32 Bit or 64 Bit
- 6GB RAM DDR2
- SQL 2005 32 Bit or 64 BIt (Processor dependent)
We manage approximately 7000+ systems in NA.
Any information would be apppreciated.
Hardware Requirements
The hardware requirements for Workflow 6.5 are outlined in the 6.5 Release Notes. For the Advanced version you can find them in Altiris KB 41818:
https://kb.altiris.com/article.asp?article=41818&p=1
The hardware specs that you mentioned should be excellent for a Workflow 6.5 Server, and would also work well for Workflow 7. The only variable that is unknown is how heavily you will be using Workflow Server. One customer may publish one or two lightweight processes to Workflow Server, and have a few hundred people connecting to those processes. The next customer may publish 12 very processor-intensive processes to Workflow and have thousands of people connecting to the processes. Clearly the first example would need less hardware than the second.
Thanks...
I did find out that Workflow 7 can be virtualized on ESX so this may be a better solution for us...not sure 6.5 can be virtualized.
I have a live demo with a product specialist from Altiris today in which to discuss our needs with workflow providing the solution.
Thanks again for your feedback.
One note about 6.5
FYI, you can run 6.5 in a VM, if you so choose, and that is a supported configuration. I have talked with a few customers who do this in their production 6.5 Workflow environment, and it's working fine for them. VMs always drag down performance a little bit, so just keep that in mind with your hardware specs. Good luck.
